As you may know, Greg Anderson now fills Owen Taylor's role at Just Food's City Chicken Project, which every summer builds three coops (http://justfood.org/city-farms/city-chicken-projects) at NYC community gardens and schools.
So far, Greg and I have worked with some amazing volunteers to build two coops and now we're getting ready for our third: a coop for Bed Stuy Campaign Against Hunger (http://bedstuycampaignagainsthunger.org), a nonprofit organization that provides emergency food and other social services to residents of central Brooklyn.
We're scheduled to meet two days: July 13 and 14, from 10am-6pm. In the past, with enough volunteers, we've managed to convert a heap of 2x4's, plywood sheets, and rolls of chicken wire into a shimmering, 128-square-foot chicken palace. All within an 8-hour shift. (with some finishing touches on the second day)
Everyone welcome. We're especially looking for folks who have a few skills with power tools (such as, electric drills and circular saws), but there are tasks for everyone.
I'm pretty sure some kind of lunch will be provided, most likely pizza. Bring sunblock, water, gloves (we have gloves too), and, optionally, your own tools, although we always bring the Just Food toolbox.
The site is between the Ralph Ave. and Rockaway Ave. C train stops at 2010 Fulton St. (https://maps.google.com/maps?q=2010+Fulton+Street,+Brooklyn,+New+York,+NY&hl=en&ll=40.678555,-73.915318&spn=0.006273,0.007253&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=53.080379,59.414063&oq=2010+Fulton+Street+br&t=m&hnear=2010+Fulton+St,+Brooklyn,+Kings,+New+York+11233&z=17)
Hope to see you there!
