Also, a rooster should not be allowed to be outside at 5AM. you must put him in a dark crate or lock him in the coop with windows covered and dont let him out till a reasonable hour. I keep roosters and guinea hens and peafowl, which are all very loud but most of them stay in till at least 8AM!! Its unfair to your neighbors otherwise and does inflame the anti chicken folks.

if you look on my meetup discussion boards there is a rooster folder with some good options.
Half of all chickens born are roosters and they need 8-10 hens each to be happy so thats why we eat roosters. They fight if there are too many.
If its a beloved pet and you want to be sure that it will live, check out Animal farm on LI. You pay $30 donation for feed and your rooster can roam the 10 acre fenced petting zoo for the rest of its life. There is also a farm in the same town, but I dont know that they dont use the roosters for meat.
at some point, if youre hatching roosters, you have to realize that they are used largely for meat.
Its sad but they do fight to the death in regular circumstances.

Check out They have boards for people trying to re-home chickens. This is a much better option than sending it to the Farm Sanctuary in Woodstock, NY, which is already overrun with roosters. They are very vocal about the negative impact of backyard chicken keepers, so let’s not give them more fodder.
