What we're about

Just Write Milwaukee is a group for writers in Milwaukee. Writing is often seen as a solitary activity, but it doesn't have to be.

If you're looking for encouragement during your writing journey, if you need help establishing a writing schedule, or if you're looking for accountability to keep you moving forward, then this may be the group for you.

Just Write Milwaukee meets every week in cafés throughout the city to just write. At our meetings, we say our hellos, write for a while, and then break to chat about what we're working on, what we're excited about and what we're struggling with. This is not a critique group. Our only goal in this group is to encourage our members to keep writing.

NOTE: This group has been quiet for some months and members were recently notified that the Organizer role was up for grabs. Just Write now has a new Organizer, however it'll take some time to get our first "new" meeting up on the calendars. Expect to see our first "new" meeting by the end of May 2022. Thank you for your patience!

Rise and Write

Needs a location

Rise and Write is a quick meetup for those who like to get their writing done in the early mornings.

7:00-7:15: Arrive, get settled, say hello, order coffee and a snack if you like (I strongly recommend the croissants. Ham & gruyere, feta & spinach, almond, and chocolate. Very buttery, flakey and delicious.)
7:15-8:30: Write
8:30-8:45: Chit chat about writing and the usual small talk topics.

If you'd like to attend this event, please RSVP and honor your RSVP. Amaranth is a very small venue with limited indoor seating. I will only be reserving one table inside. There are additional tables outside if you'd like to enjoy the sun.

Finding your way and parking: Amaranth is a really small shop and easy to miss, but once you do find it, there's free parking all along Lisbon. Amaranth doesn't open until 7:00am, so if you arrive early you may have to wait a bit.

Just Write On & Off

Needs a location

Our Just Write On & Off meeting is a great meetup to get some writing and socializing in. We write for 45 minutes, chat for 10, write for 45, so on and so on.

10:00-10:15: Arrive, get settled, say hello, order coffee and a snack if you like. Anodyne serves beer too if you're into day drinking.
10:15-11:00: Write
11:00-11:10: Chit chat about writing and the usual small talk topics
11:10-11:55: Write
11:55-12:05: Chat some more
12:05-12:50: Write
12:50-1:00: Congratulate each other on getting some writing done and say our goodbyes

If you'd like to attend this event, please RSVP and honor your RSVP. Anodyne is a larger venue with large tables, but RSVPs give me an idea of how much space I should be saving.

Finding your way and parking: Anodyne is easy to find, but make sure you have the right location! It's on a corner of Bruce & 3rd, across the street from a high school and their huge athletic field. There's tons of free street parking around the block.

Just Write It On Sunday

Needs a location

Just Write It On Sunday is a loosely structured meetup where you just show up and write. We'll chit chat in the beginning and break for a chat in the end, but mostly we'll just write.

12:00-12:15: Arrive, get settled, say hello, order coffee and a snack if you'd like
12:15-2:30: Write
2:30-3:00: Chat about what we're working on, what we're excited about, what we're struggling on, what we're planning to work on next week.

If you'd like to attend this event, please RSVP and honor your RSVP. Stone Creek has limited seating at this time. I will only be reserving one table inside. This will be a smaller, more intimate gathering than we've had in the past.

Finding your way and parking: Stone Creek is next to the Life Storage on the corner of 5th and St. Paul. You can find free parking around the block.

Organizer Note: This event is based on the ones this group has always held at Stone Creek. 9am was always a hard time for me because I like my lazy Sunday mornings, but if there's demand to keep this on Sunday mornings, we can move it back to 10am. Since I had to push it anyway, I decided to push it to noon to accommodate any churchgoers.

Happy Writing Hours

Needs a location

Happy Writing Hours is a meetup for those who like to get their writing done at night. While drinking isn't required or even expected, Vennture sells both coffee and beer, so you can decide how happy you want to make your writing hours.

5:30-5:45: Arrive, get settled, say hello, order coffee/beer and a snack if you like. (Vennture's snack selection is really small, so if you need real food, I suggest picking it up on the way. If you're into beer, Vennture also offers really small pours. You can taste something new without getting drunk. Also, I love their lattes.)
5:45-6:45: Write
6:45-7:00: Break to chat and fuel up
7:00-8:15: Write
8:15-8:30: Break to chat and congratulate ourselves on a job well done

If you'd like to attend this event, please RSVP and honor your RSVP. Vennture is a small venue with limited indoor seating. I will only be reserving one table inside.

Finding your way and parking: Vennture is easy to find but parking can be more of a hassle. I've always found its easiest to park on one of the side residential streets and enjoy a little walk up to North Ave.
