APR 28 --- 2012 Kayaking Season Start-up @ Hal Holbrook Pond & BBQ by Waterfall

Hi Everyone,

THIS IS A NEW LOCATION for our 2012 paddle season opening event:

HEBRON CT

Holbrook Pond is nicely secluded with NO homes on this small pond.

The pond is small and not the deepest or most clearest as compared to some of my other select special places, but for this kind of first paddle event of the season, its preferred since its shallow and just right to get you into the feeling of paddling again after a long season of other activities.

I want you to get a bit of excersize, test your joints, make adjustments, and make sure your boats are ready (Have a whistle on your Life Jacket etc..) for the season.

-------------------

I will have the Propane Fire Pit & Grill loaded along with the Canopee (if we need it here).

------------------------------------------------

The day or weekend is dependent on current weather and water conditions but i hope its THIS weekend and on this Saturday..

Sunday is the backup day if necessary.

Fishing Tournament data: (we won't go if there is a tournament at any paddling location).

Too many BIG Hairy Beer Bellied HOOKERS looking for a Free Meal make for a lousy kayaking day for us..

http://www.ct.gov/dep/lib/dep/fishing/general_information/fishingtourbydate.pdf

(The past Bolton Lake site is now reserved for the the Self Rescue Practice Location for June instead).

WEATHER: OBVIOUSLY TOO SOON TO *REALLY* KNOW,

Any prediction on the THURSDAY for a Saturday event is still questionable but good for a indication of trend.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

* PLEASE REMEMBER THIS (or any) EVENT DAY REQUIRES GOOD WEATHER.

Generally The water is up to about 50*F now so i want the air to be approximately at least 60-62 and Sunny with Low Wind to be acceptable enough.

RAIN, COLD, AND WINDY CONDITIONS CANCEL THIS OR ANY water related OUTDOOR EVENT !

=================================

ALL PERSONS are invited WITH OR WITHOUT KAYAKS, Its a Get To Meet Up Again event after the long winter or to meet us for the first time.

You can see what kind of new or old equipment we have and why we have it and ask to try a boat that seems like something you find is something you would like.

Some of us will bring boats that are for sale..etc....

You can also just Sit in the sun, ask questions, and socialize if not playing on the water.

-----------------------------------

Please wear some fast draining or drying clothes, ie Fleece, (chances are slim you will fall in but its possible).

Wet suit or dry suit if you specifically INTEND on going in the water ON PURPOSE.

I will do a demonstration on what happens to a "recreational kayak" if no Float Bags (http://www.outdoorplay.com/NRS-Kayak-Float-Bags?utm_medium=shoppingengine&utm_source=googlebase&cvsfa=3650&cvsfe=2&cvsfhu=33383838&gclid=CP_26Jepma8CFYNo4AodPC6x0g are installed and a self rescue via paddle float ! (I need that practice anyway).

Bring your comfortable Jackets for the resting and Barbie-q time, chairs and some Pot Luck Food along with your favourite Adult Beverage of choice for the social time after the paddling is done.

I will bring the Good Old Steady Eddyline for first timers to try out and MAYBE one other kayak.

-----------------------------------

Getting to the Boat Launch area:

http://www.ct.gov/dep/cwp/view.asp?A=2686&Q=383856

rte 85 = Gilead St.

APX Alternate GPS Address: 100 Holbrook Pond Rd, Hebron,CT

The MEETUP* Map link at the top of the page seems to be accurate enough for your specific directions.

Use you own specific directions and look for the Brown Boat Launch Sign near the road to the launch site.

Follow Holbrook Pond Road to the end.

THEN JOIN US FOR THE SOCIALIZATION TIME AFTER AT THE POT LUCK BARBIE-Q ON SITE BY THE WATERFALL with the Propane fueled FIRE PIT a real wood fire may not be possible.

----------------------------

Deputy, Deputy, Help, Help, --- Im sinking in the creek mud...

HISTORICALLY THE WEATHER IS MORE CORRECT IN MAY, BUT IM JUST HOPING ITS WARM ENOUGH SOONER.

---------------------------------------------------

Hi Everyone, For those that did not make it..It was AWFUL -- be happy you did not get out of bed.. one person had frost bitten gonads .. yes i used the Orange BBQ steak knife to do an "on water" amputation OJ style.. Oops ..the DEP came and checked us all out for other "equipment failure" and put stickers on us if we passed. Thanks to all that did come out and braved the 50+ MPH winds and -5*F freezing temperature.. Yeah i did not do the self rescue as promised..later at Bolton Lake event. as expected..the BBQ was great..Thanks to everyone for making this a good event..
