PART 4 IN OUR SERIES: HOW TO MAKE SENSE OF THE WORLD AS A(N) ATHEST, PANTHEIST, OR THEIST:
COME HANG OUT WITH AN ATHEIST, A PANTHEIST, AND A THEIST FRIDAY NIGHT!
I had to come up with something more along the idea of our three speakers hanging out together, not crossing swords ... more in keeping with our "creating friendships that can weather our differences" theme here at P&P. But this is the grand finale, what we’ve been waiting for, a chance for proponents of all three viewpoints to scrutinize each other — and for you to compare them and scrutinize them too with your questions.
To keep things moving and organized, we will have each defend their position on the following topics, with opportunities to question one another on how they deal with:
• Morality and its origins
• Free will
• Origin of the universe and biological evolution
• Why should people adopt your viewpoint?
• What are the major things one must do to adopt your viewpoint?
• What results do you expect to see from living with this viewpoint?
And you will have an opportunity to ask each questions of your own.
Mark and Kyler Dixon are active participants in local atheist/skeptic groups along with Mark’s significant other, Sharyl, who introduced them to the local community a few years ago. All three enjoy traveling to atheist and skeptic conferences when they have the chance. Mark leads a small marketing and sales operations team for a large financial services company. Kyler is a junior in high school. Kyler is known for his snide remarks, Mark for keeping the discussion on track.
Dr. Rainbow Mooon grew up thinking everyone could talk to the animals and plants and see people who had crossed over because she could. In the mid-80s she was initiated as an urban shaman based on her Native American and African heritage and began a life of healing on multiple dimensions. She received her BA degree in Sociology (2002, UMKC); her MA in Social and Cultural Anthropology (2005, CA Institute of Integral Studies, San Francisco); and in May of 2013 she received her Ph.D. in Philosophy and Religion specializing in Asian and Comparative Studies (also CA Institute of Integral Studies). Her dissertation focused on the evolution of human consciousness, which includes projections for the future of our species.
Eugene A. Curry is the Senior Pastor of Park Hill Baptist Church in Kansas City, Missouri. Prior to serving at Park Hill, Curry ministered at churches in Los Angeles and San Francisco, California, and Portland, Oregon. He obtained his B.A. in Theological Studies from Concordia University in Oregon and then his Master of Divinity at Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary in California. Currently, Curry is pursuing his Doctor of Ministry at the Beeson Divinity School in Birmingham, Alabama. He has been participating on the P&P email discussion forum, answering our skeptical questions about Jesus and the Bible.
Come early to grab a salad supper or something from the café, to get a seat, and to get to know people.
Afterward: The conversations continue at the Blue Moose (a minute away on the north side of the shopping center on the NW corner of 101st and Woodland).
See you Friday night!
