What we're about

What's SHAKIN, SHAKERS??? Hopefully you'll be shaking with me soon!

EVERYONE who has a body will benefit from learning the simple exercise sets based on Thomas Hanna's work that recreate the act of pandiculation in our bodies which have un-learned how to release and reset ourselves in order to remain in a state of homeostasis.

In modern society, we have lost the ability to release our contracted muscles on their own using our central nervous system's connection with our muscles. Indeed, our sedentary habits, our social media news feeds that we scroll and watch videos of violent events/turbulence (it matters not whether those events are happening to us in the "now" moment - our bodies don't know the difference), or even simply driving in our cars defensively all contribute to keeping our muscles contracted in the fight-or-flight response and in a locked-down position, which creates the need for our bodies to find other ways around these locked-down muscles in order to stand properly, bend, breathe, even... and when we don't like being in our bodies (i.e., when our bodies hurt) we are really good at distracting ourselves from feeling anything related to our bodies - and therein lies the catalyst for addictions in order to fill the void we aren't feeling.

Whether you struggle with physical pain in your body (such as back, neck/jaw, shoulder, hip or foot), addiction (in all its forms, whether that means alcohol, sex, food, exercise, or other), or anxiety, much of what is manifested in our body comes from storing trauma in the body and our body's inability to reset itself through somatic movement and pandiculation. So we now must create the release for our bodies to remember how to reset.

Through my journey of yoga, belly dance and a chronically tight psoas muscle that led me to a back injury in January 2018, I came to find clinical somatics. This and this alone is what has kept me from having a recurring injury. In fact, I am so passionate about getting this information out to everyone, I will be a Certified Exercise Instructor - Clinical Somatics Educator in 2019. I am growing "whole not old" in my body as I have experienced what clinical somatics is capable of healing and unwinding in our bodies... I imagine a world where back surgery and anxiety are words from a past dictionary...

Somatic Movement Evening Outdoor Summer Practice on the Nelson Front Lawn!

The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art

What's happening, SHAKERS!?!!! Beginning in June every OTHER MONDAY evening at 6:30 pm through the end of September I will lead a group in a somatic movement practice on the Nelson front lawn (by the Headless Mummys - I will upload a photo and apologize I don't know what the actual installation is titled so we're going with headless mummys). THIS IS A FREE EVENT. It will be a different theme/practice each time. If the weather is inclement, I will post an updated location or we will reschedule. What to bring: a yoga mat and yourself. What to wear: comfy clothes you can move in/bare feet is best! My goal with this group and with all of my social media is to spread the word about somatic movement practice and how it can help everyone achieve freedom and a pain-free existence within our bodies at any age and with any level of pain. I want to continue to offer various free events to all in the future as well as teaching/hosting paid events. Big LOVE, SHAKERS! The first one is June 10th and it will be every other Monday this summer (except for the Labor Day holiday)! xoxocara
