The Fourth Annual Fall Northern Central Rail Trail Ride

NOTE: Ride postponed until November 9th due to rain.

Our Northern Central Railroad Fall Foliage ride. This rides takes place on what was once the North Central Railroad that traveled between Baltimore. MD and York, PA. It originates just north of Baltimore and travels parallel of the Falls River. It is very scenic and has only a very slight upgrade when heading north and, of course, a delightful steady downgrade when returning. We begin at the Monkton Trail Station: This is just after mile point 7 on the trail. Planned Rides: - 31 miles: Monkton to New Freedom, PA, Lunch and return to Monkton. Contact Ray if you want to ride 42 miles and we can start earlier to get to Monkton in time to meet others.  (If you want this longer distance, you should plan to start earlier than 10 am at the Paper Mill Parking lot, which is south of the Monkton parking lot). Riders can choose to continue past New Freedom along the Heritage Rail Trail to York, PA.  Directions: Monkton: Take Exit 27 off I-83, go East on Mt. Carmel Road. Turn Right at the stop light on York Road. At the next light turn left (east) onto Monkton Road. Follow for 3 miles, and look for parking lot and park office. NOTE: You may have to park on the street. Google Maps Link to Start: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=monkton+MD&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=42.089199,71.630859&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Monkton&ll=39.579083,-76.6... You will have to stop and walk across at those points. Lunch Options in New Freedom, PA:  We plan to stop at Paesano's Restaurant.  Option: Want a longer ride? Start at the Phoenix Road Parking Lot at 9am and meet us at Monkton Train Station at 10am – this adds 7 miles (each way). And/Or continue your ride north of New Freedom, PA to York, PA. (this adds up to 20 miles – one way). 41 Miles (one way) if you ride from Phoenix Road to York, PA Here is an overview: http://bikewashington.org/trails/ncr/ncr.htm Elevation map from Ashland, MD (Paper Mill Road) to York, PA http://www.johncarterphoto.com/ncrr/internal_pages/elevation.html Nice details about each Section of the NCR Trail: http://www.johncarterphoto.com/ncrr/about.html Notes: Small bike shop at Monkton Station Bike Shop at New Freedom, PA (Small bike shop across from the Phoenix, MD Ashland Road/Paper Mill Road Stop at the 0.5 mile marker, but this is 7 miles south of the planned start for this ride.) Ray, just took myself off the list. The trike will be in the shop getting a new fairing - just came in and just in time! Will ride next time. Have a super ride.

    November 8, 2013

    • Ray

Understood. I would like to see that fairing - and get your appraisal. Let me know if you want to ride on the B&A or WOD - or Kent Island. Ray

Ray, will Marathon Racer tires on my Sprint26 be okay for this ride? Still deciding......

    November 8, 2013

    • Ray

Mary, Those are the tires that my wife uses on that trail on a regular basis. Ray

I'm really depressed having to do this but I have to cancel out on Saturday. I'm having my hip replaced soon and although the original date of the ride would have been fine, I'm now in a lot of pain and likely wouldn't make it through :( Hopefully I can go on a trip with the group in the spring.

    November 6, 2013

    • Ray

Good luck with your hip. See you in the spring!

I'm going to do the 32 mile ride, stretch for me on mountain bike. This is a fun ride that I look forward too. Last time I did this ride Bill Horner was fast and I think he was playing the piano at the same time on this trike.

  • steve

who is starting at Paper Mill?

    November 3, 2013

    • Ray

Steve: Sam, Henry, Yvette and I - and a few others are possibles - for a Paper Mill start. You enjoy the longer distance rides - and are probably biking from home! Are you going to start at Paper Mill? Ray

Ray, not sure if I toss the grasshopper on the light rail, or just ride the TE out and back. Either way stopping at Baltimore Coffee & Tea for some beans, breakfast, and to go java.

      November 5, 2013

  • Barry

I think I'll go for the 32 mile ride if that's still possible. I might change my mind in the next couple of days though.

    November 4, 2013

    • Ray

Barry, Two thirds of the riders are still starting at Monkton Station. Hope you can make it. We should have a good day to ride. Ray

Thanks, I'm looking forward to it.

Yvonne and I are planning to start at Paper Mill at 9am.

    November 3, 2013

  • Ray

Note that there are about five of us who want a longer ride. We will be starting at the PAPER MILL ROAD parking lot at 9am. Note that this lot often fills up. You are allowed to park along Paper Mill Road, on both sides, to the West of the NCR Trail. I will try to arrive by 8:40am. We want to be ready to roll at 9am, so that we can meet the others a few minutes before the main group heads out at 10am. Ray

Is the 31 miles one way or the total round trip mileage? Thanks. Steve

    November 3, 2013

    • Ray

Steve, 32 miles round trip. Several of us are starting an hour earlier at Paper Mill Road - for a 44 mile ride. Or, if you prefer a shorter ride, let me know your target distance and I will try to locate a parking lot matching that distance.

      November 3, 2013

    • Steve H.

Thanks- still trying to arrange things to see if I can make this, so cannot commit just yet.

      November 3, 2013

trail is only 21 or so miles in MD. The Monkton start is about 15 miles from PA.

    So 31 total sounds right.

    November 3, 2013

    • Ray

      Steve - correct.

Would a road bike make it on the trail still. I road it a few years ago on a mountain bike and wished I had brought my road bike instead

    October 13, 2013

    • Ray

We had a road bike rider last year and she wished she had ridden her mountain bike.

This trail is one I ride all the time...families with children of all ages and bike tyoes ride it. I have a hybrid but my friends ride on all types of bikes. Just make sure your air pressure is good!

OK, Per emails and feedback - this ride is postponed until Saturday, November 9th. And if Murphy's law is in full effect, that means that it will be dry enough for me to paint on Saturday!

    1 · October 10, 2013

  • Mary B.

Thanks, Ray. Good idea to reschedule.

    October 10, 2013

  • Ray

The weather forecast is for rain for Saturday in this area. I rode 20 miles on this Trail in the rain eight weeks ago – it was similar to a slow ride in wet sand. I believe that we should reschedule this ride for dryer weather. Any objections?

    October 10, 2013

    • Becky

I'm fine with postponing if it's raining.

      October 10, 2013

    • Bill

Sounds good to me. Not a fan of rain riding.

    Hello,

Is this ride still on if rain is in the forecast this Saturday? As of right now, it shows it should be raining. : (

  • Ed

Ray - I'm considering starting the ride at 8am from Monkton to New Freedom and back so that I can make a meeting at the Coast Guard at Curtis Bay by 1pm, is this enough time?

    October 7, 2013

    • Ray

Ed, With the foot traffic, occasional horses, road crossings, plan on 10mph. Also, Maryland does not take care of their Rail Trails as well as Pennsylvania, so do not expect the NCR to be in as great a shape as the YHRT. So, if you did not stop, you could make it back by noon. I think that you are cutting it close. If you want to do this another day, let me know as I live two miles from the NCR Trail.

      October 7, 2013

  • Ray

Mary, We should have about six+ trikes, so I would go with the trike.
    Ray

    October 6, 2013

  • Mary B.

Should I ride my trike or two wheeled Rans Fusion?

    October 6, 2013

  • Sam G.

Count me in for leaving from Paper Mill.

    September 15, 2013

  • Ray

Want to add 14 miles to the day's ride? Provided that we have good weather, I have a second person who plans to join me just BEFORE 9am at the Paper Mill Road parking lot for the NCR Trail. We need to be ready to roll at 9am to meet the rest of the group 7 miles north at Monkton. Let me know so that I know to look for you.
