This fun-filled Sumatra event starts early morning after arriving in Medan airport. A private bus will transfer us to Kabanjahe and the famous Sipiso-piso waterfall. This waterfall is the result of a small underground river of the Karo plateau. The river hurls itself from a cave in the side of the lake Toba caldera some 120 meters (360 feet) down to lake level. This fact earns it the title for the highest waterfall in Indonesia. A very short hike will bring us to a nearby vantage point which offers great vistas of the fall and the lake. An ideal place to have our lunchbox...
In the afternoon we will proceed to Kota Berastagi where we will have some free and easy time to venture into the township. Dinner and overnight in a local hotel.
We have to wake up early the next morning to start our trek to Gunung Sibayak. It is one of Indonesia's most accessible volcanoes, 2212 meters asl, with a small acid crater lake. Hopefully we can watch the sunrise from the crater rim.
Although Sibayak's last eruption was more than a century ago, there still is geothermal activity with steam vents and hot springs. It is relatively easy to climb and we will be back in the hotel for breakfast.
After that we've scheduled a Berastagi city tour – Fruits/Flowers/Vegetables Market.
Next to Gundaling Hill with amazing views on the iconic volcanoes Gunung Sinabung and earlier that day climbed Gunung Sibayak. After that we'll head for Medan where we have dinner and spend the night.
After early breakfast on the third day, we proceed to Binjai, Namu Ukur. After the local guide's briefing we hike to Tongkat Waterfalls and then back to a meet point for lunch before further on to Kolam Abadi.
(A climb of 4-storey steep bamboo stairs before reaching the Tongkat Waterfalls)
After lunch, be prepared for an adrenaline rush during the 45 minutes body rafting to reach the Tero-Tero Waterfalls. In the late afternoon we return to Medan.
The fourth day we check out after breakfast and leave around noon for Medan International Airport.
Physical fitness is a prerequisite but you don't need to be an athlete! If you are passionate about hiking, quite adventurous and like a mixture of action and relaxation, this one is for you...
Although this event is suitable for “less experienced hikers”, be honest to yourself. So don't confirm for this event if you have never ever hiked before...
Please also read the “Beginners” hike message on the message board to avoid all misunderstandings...
Besides the classical hiking tips, please note the following:
* wear shoes with profile (a pattern on the soles to prevent slipping and gliding)
* rain gear is recommended
* bring a whistle, your personal first aid kit and a headlamp
* a pair of gloves doesn't weigh that much (rocks, thorns, roots, trees, mud)
* bring enough drinks and snacks (carbohydrates). For this trip isotonic drinks are not a luxury. Dried fruits are preferred over chocolate... Proper nutrition will be a key to your success!
* please be responsible and don't litter – be sure not to leave any rubbish along the track
