Documentary film series on the history of secularism and censorship in America.
written, produced, and directed by
The United States is often called a Christian nation, but America has always been home to individuals who were indifferent to—or opposed to—organized religions. These unbelievers were known as agnostics, atheists, deists, infidels, liberals, and freethinkers.
Authors, abolitionists, editors, attorney, publishers, physicians, scientists, suffragists, and many others joined the American Freethought movement. They embraced evolution and championed science and secularism. They fought for free speech, women’s rights, separation of church and state, and above all, liberty, but they were seen as enemies of God and were shunned, harassed, persecuted, and prosecuted for their unbelief.
Freethinkers viewed history as a continuous struggle between religion and rationalism, between the forces of darkness and light. And though religious fanaticism still exists, freethinkers exposed religion as against reason. In so doing they enlightened generations of Americans.
