Mon, May 12-Paddle Scorton Creek, Sandwich

Scorton Creek is a wonderful tidal creek that winds it's way through a scenic salt marsh.

We'll paddle as far as we can, taking a few detours along the way. When we get back to the launch site, the people who want to continue their paddle can head north, under 6A, and head toward the ocean....the current can be swift right just before the ocean.

If you haven't been here before, leave plenty of time to find the launch. No parking sticker is ever required, but there is very limited parking area at this State Wildlife Reservation, so I am avoiding the weekend, even in early May.

A high tide in Cape Cod Bay at 10:22 makes a 10:00 launch ideal.

As is true of most of the open water paddles on the Cape, this is not a good place to be in high winds. After you sign up, please make sure I can contact you by email or phone on May 10 & 11, in case the weather forces a change.

Paddles with this group are for experienced and energetic paddlers.  This is not the place to "get experience on the water".  You need to have that experience before paddling with us.

Parking here is extremely limited....lots of people walk their dogs here.

DIRECTIONS: From US 6 (mid Cape Highway) take exit 3, and follow Quaker Meeting House Road north to MA 6A east. Turn right onto MA 6A and continue east 1.5 miles. JYou will pass June Ln and Pine Terrace on you right, then turn right onto a gravel road and go 0.2 mile to parking lot. On 6A, if you go over the bridge, you just missed the turn. There is a sign at the turn, but it was installed parallel to the road, so you can't see it (seriously)

From the east (from Yarmouth/Dennis), driving on 6A, when you are at the intersection of Rt 149 and 6A, start clocking it. Go 3.5 miles west on 6A from Rt 149. See on your RIGHT, Hammond, Torrey and Fort Hill Rd...take a left onto the dirt road, just past Fort Hill Rd.  Go to the end of the very bumpy road and see the water.

Using your GPS, put in about 500 Highway 6A  SANDWICH (every town on the Cape probably has an address of 500 Highway 6A)

Plan to arrive no later than 9:30 AM, as we will be in the water and paddling at 10:00.

Perfect weather. Perfect group. Good paddle with the highest water level we have seen in the marsh...then a trip up to the bay. Great lunch after at Barnstable Tavern.

Anna, the main part of the paddle is no more than 6 miles, so 2 hours. There isn't really a place to get out to take a break, but we can hang out for 5 minutes at the bridge that goes under Rt 6A. When we get back to the launch, I usually ask who wants to continue the paddle by going north on Scorton Creek and up to Cape Cod Bay. Depending on the tide at the mouth of Scorton, there can be a fast current there. You might think that is fun : ) I don't enter the bay.
So, that can add another half hour/45 minutes.

Melissa, paddles are based on two things for Scorton: the tide must be high in Cape Cod Bay or the tide must be coming in at launch time (that only happens twice a month, max, for about 2 or 3 days each time). Also, it depends on the rest of the paddle schedule. And I try not to post there on weekends bc the parking is so limited and so many people park to walk their dogs there.
So many limitations for group paddles on Cape Cod, where most places require stickers.
