Mon, May 8, 2017 - Paddle Quivett Creek, Brewster

  • Paines Creek Landing and Beach

Paines Creek Rd., Brewster, MA (map)

    41.760803 -70.113960

  • We'll be at the end of Paines Creek Rd. at the ramp / in the parking lot
  •  We can only launch from Paines Creek Beach in May and after Labor Day. There is a perfect tide, for a 10:00 AM launch, twice in May, 2017.  I'll schedule the Quivett Creek paddle for both of those days and then once in June, in the likely case that wind/rain cancels one of the May paddles.

We'll paddle from Paines Creek Beach and hug the shore going west to the mouth of Quivett Creek.  As we make our way up this wonderful creek, we'll be surrounded by extensive marsh.  As the season progresses, the reeds/grasses usually close in over the upper creek and make the passage very narrow, but in May, we should be able to make it to the Sea St. foot bridge.

There is a high tide of 9.7' in Barnstable Harbor at 10:46 AM, the same good tide we had for this paddle in 2015 and spring/fall 2016.

Even though the vast majority of the paddle is in protected water in the marsh, the paddle from the launch to the mouth of the creek is wide open. If the wind is out of the north, water is splashed over the side of the kayak.  Many of us don't own spray skirts, so winds over about 13 mph will postpone this paddle to the next day,

LIKE ALL OUR PADDLES, THIS PADDLE IS ONLY FOR EXPERIENCED AND ENERGETIC PEOPLE WHO ALREADY HAVE EXTENSIVE EXPERIENCE KAYAKING.  No guests on paddles.

DIRECTIONS: From US 6, take exit 9 and go north on Rt 134 to Rt 6A. Go right on 6A and drive east for 2.75 miles...bear left at a fork onto Lower Rd.  Drive 0.2 mile and turn left onto Paines Creek Rd and go about 0.7 mile to the parking lot.

We launch PRIOR to the barricades, on the left...there is a  small, paved, downward sloping ramp to the water that is not obvious as you approach it.
