We can only park at Paines Creek Beach prior to June 15 and after Labor Day. Also, high tide in Barnstable Harbor needs to be between 30 minutes and 1 hour 15 minutes AFTER we launch (so that we can get back up the last 200' prior to the landing) There is a high tide in Barnstable Harbor at 10:46 AM today.
If weather forces a cancellation today, we can paddle on May 31 WITH A LAUNCH AT 9:30 AM.
Fewer than 3 people signing up for a paddle will cause it to be cancelled. Am posting this paddle also on June 14, with a 9:00 AM launch.
We'll paddle from Paines Creek Beach and hug the shore going west to the mouth of Quivett Creek. As we make our way up this wonderful creek, we'll be surrounded by extensive marsh. As the season progresses, the reeds/grasses usually close in over the upper creek and make the passage very narrow, but in May, we should be able to make it to the Sea St. foot bridge.
Even though the vast majority of the paddle is in protected water in the marsh, the paddle from the launch to the mouth of the creek is wide open. If the wind is out of the north, water is splashed over the side of the kayak. Many of us don't own spray skirts, so winds over about 13 mph will
cancel this paddle and move it to May 31.
LIKE ALL OUR PADDLES, THIS PADDLE IS ONLY FOR EXPERIENCED AND ENERGETIC PEOPLE WHO ALREADY HAVE EXTENSIVE EXPERIENCE KAYAKING. No guests on paddles ever.
DIRECTIONS: From US 6, take exit 9 and go north on Rt 134 to Rt 6A. Go right on 6A and drive east for 2.75 miles...bear left at a fork onto Lower Rd. Drive 0.2 mile and turn left onto Paines Creek Rd and go about 0.7 mile to the parking lot.
We launch PRIOR to the barricades, on the left...there is a small, paved, downward sloping ramp to the water that is not obvious as you approach it.
