Columbia, MD Overnight Hike

  • Meet at the Canopies for the Mega bus drop off
  • The event trial was a big success so I am putting this up for the spring time.

    Things that I learned:

If the date needs to change for reasons such as weather, work, health, appointments or other unexpected things I will create a new event. I will ask everyone to RSVP for the new event and then remove the old one after a few days.

It is best to wait until the last minute to book a room. There are hundreds of hotels around and the flexibility is more important than price.

We eat out meals, see a show, have hotel and transportation cost. I want it to remain comfortable so ... up front I remind all that we don't cut corners on savings.

A good question many of you have is Hotel information.

My new hotel will probably be:

    8890 Stamford Avenue

    Columbia, MD

You can use the ( ) site.

Another tactic for a room for the 2 or more nights is to wait until you get here and use . There is a feature where you tell it the neighborhood such as BWI Airport or North Columbia, MD. You pay before knowing the exact hotel. You pay by the number of star level. I always pick 2 stars because in this area two stars is already a good place. It usually gives me an ESA or a Red Roof Inn. Sometimes you are lucky and get a fancier place for the price. Note: You cannot back out of the deal once you give your Credit Card.

I have traveled to cities all over the US and stumbled upon a unique place called Columbia Maryland. It is a planned community from the 1960's.

It is made up of 10 Villages similar to Forest Hills Gardens.

Columbia, MD is known for Hiking within the Villages and surrounding areas. Here is a rough draft of the schedule. My preference would be to have everyone here on a Friday night around 6:30 if possible. If we get any people wanting to take the Megabus we can make this the meeting point for all of the cars and the Bus on Friday night. From there it is about 30 minutes further to Columbia, MD.

Friday evening drop off luggage in Hotel.

Friday Night Hike at Downtown Columbia and also the water front which are next to one another. There are about 20 places to choose from to eat dinner together.

Saturday Morning - Hike around the lake at Centennial Park. Back to hotels to freshen up. Lunch.

Saturday afternoon - Hike though Some of the 10 Columbia Villages. Lets go to some villages, Hike through the streets to look at the impressive homes and how the villages are arranged. Hike around Wilde Lake.

Saturday at 5 pm. TOBYS Dinner theatre. For under $50 we can all have dinner and watch a show. The tickets sell out fast so as soon as the weather is good and we make it a go, I will check and announce for all to get tickets. This part is mandatory. If you are planning on not going to this part of the event please dont show up. I can be a meanie.

Sunday Morning - Hike at Patapsco State park. I have been in this park at it was stunning. It has waterfalls, rivers, bridges and cool stuff. The thing I'm concerned about is that it huge. We have to stick to a trail and find out how this place is marked. 2 hours would be enough for me to be here.

    Sunday Lunch

Send off. The event will officially be over but you are welcome to explore more. I get out of work each day at 6:00 pm and could meet again.

Please start using the chat board to work on car pool plans. Please post if you have space in your car or need a lift.

Yippie. Money Magazine rated Columbia the number 1 place to live in 2016.

Baltimore is near by but I don't plan to make it part of the event.

There are buses that run every hour between Penn Station and near Columbia but then we wont have cars to get around. I have my car which can hold me plus 4.

I began posting photos on this event to give you the correct impression that this area is a suburb and not a city such as NY or Baltimore.

Feel free to RSVP and change your mind later. Just keep it ACCURATE.

Hi happy to bus it in and have a cab take me into town unless another joiner has room in their car will help pay for gas and buy you lunch :-)

I found out that the bus stop is 40 minutes from Columbia. There are connecting busses and I will learn about them. But I would also be glad to bring you from and to the main White Marsh Lot. I am on the bus right now. It stays on Route 95 and it is very smooth.

I can't attend this one, but I want to attest that the October trial was fun!

Jeanne...I appreciate your review. I had a good time and went to new places and trails I have not seen before. There are more than 60 miles of paved trails and a lot more like the Gorest Park paths.

Hello, I could not make the October trip. Fortunately, I will be able to make this one. I would rather not drive in unfamiliar places, so I can car pool if a spot opens up. Looking forward to the trip.
