  • See New Zealand like never before on one of it’s most iconic 2-Day Mountain Bike Trails.

Join us for two days of fun and adventure on the famous Timber Trail Timber Trail in May 2017.

If you are into mountain biking in any way, this super fun grade 2 & 3 trail is one of New Zealand’s must do 2 day adventures!  The Timber Trail features 35 bridges, including 8 large suspension bridges (the longest being 141 metres)…yeow!

Hold onto your knickers….It’s gonna to get EPIC!

You don’t need to be a lycra clad speed demon to do this adventure, the pace will be steady and fun with plenty of stops along the way to soak this spectacular 83km trail which is broken up into two days.

We’ll explore the rich heritage of the Pureora Forest Park, passing through forest terrain, with 800 year old trees, a bush tram and historic timber milling sites along the way.

Join me and eight other kick ass women, like you, for a mind blowing adventure that you can finally tick off your ‘some-day’ list.

We’re all about keeping this adventure small and intimate so you get the most out of it.

    DAY 1

We’ll head on out of busy Auckland early afternoon to get down to Taupo in time for dinner and an early night in our two Superior Lodges at Taupo DeBretts.

Enjoying the serene environment while sipping coffee (or a late afternoon drink) on our private covered decks. Behind , us through the bi-fold doors, await underfloor heating, air conditioning and modern, quality finishes throughout. Our Superior Lodges are fully self contained apartments with all the mod cons!

    DAY 2

The team from Tread Routes will pick us up along with our gear and shuttle us into the start of the trail along with our dedicated mountain bike guide.

From here, we hit the trail while our gear is transported to the Blackfern Lodge, our ‘mid way point’ and where we’ll be staying the night on Saturday.

The first “half” of the trail is a 40km ride starting with singletrack among huge podocarp forest, the trail climbs and traverses Mt Pureora before descending to a couple of large suspension bridges. The trail then goes on and off a few old logging road before reaching the Piropiro Campsite.

    DAY 3

After a good nights sleep and a big breakfast we’re back on the trail for day 2.

The second “half” of the trail is a 45km ride including NZs second largest suspension bridge built specifically for the cycle trail. After the bridge the trail follows the route of old bush tramways which undulate before the final descent which includes the Ongarue Spiral.

In short, the first half includes more singletrack among tall native forest. The second half is steeped in history following tramways and is mostly wider, easier trail. The trail is packed with interpretive signposts that explain all about the nature of the forest and the history of the timber industry that once thrived. For a full appreciation of the trail, it is best to allow time to read some or all of the interpretive signage.

At the end of the trail, the team from Tread Routes will be there to greet us with the shuttle and we’ll be whisked back to our accommodation in Taupo for a well earned celebratory glass of bubbles.

    DAY 4

Enjoy a sleep in and then we’ll pack up and head on out to hot pools for a relaxing soak and a 1 hour full body massage before heading back to Auckland around lunch time.

    6 month easy pay plan

We get that adventures like this need a little planning from time to time,  so to make things as simple as possible, we’ve creates a 6 month easy pay plan so  you can pay your adventure off over 6 months, and still have time to save
    some spending money!

How Fit Do I Need to Be?

This ride is not a ‘race to the finish’.  It’s been picked because it’s a great iconic trail that is doable for most confident grade 2 riders who want to enjoy the adventure of discovering an epic part of NZ while challenging themsleves on different terrain.

The majority of this trail is grade 2 with some grade 3 sections that we will safely guide you through.  In fact the only grade 3 section is a 15km portion on the first day about half way through, and is not a super tricky grade 3, but due to the slope of the terrain needs to be a grade 3.

In the interest of safety and your enjoyment of the ride it is important that you are comfortable riding at least 40km of grade 2 trail before attempting the Timber Trail.
    Easy: Grade 2
Standard: Mostly flat with some gentle climbs on smooth track with easily avoidable obstacles such as rocks and potholes.

    Intermediate: Grade 3
Standard: Slightly Steeper slopes and/or avoidable obstacles possibly on narrower track. There may be exposure at the track’s outside edge.

Our Timber Trail Accommodation – Blackfern Lodge

Black Fern Lodge is character accommodation that is well suited to the Timber Trail theme. We’ll be staying in the “The Lodge” which has double rooms with en-suites.

NOTE: To access Black Fern Lodge cyclists must turn off the Timber Trail at the 35km marker. With the added KMs to Black Fern the first day becomes 41km and the second day becomes 56km.
