What are transistors anyway (Session II)?

Almost 60 years old, the transistor is the cornerstone of the world of electronics - both analog and digital. In this lesson we will cover the basic of the transistor and why its use is still important in the digital world.

What is the difference between NPN and PNP?
What are the most popular transistors?
Why are they important in robotics?

We will build some small test cases on our breadboards (bring your starter kit) to understand how they work.

Schedule: Two classes of 2 hours each. 30 minutes of introduction and 1h30 of workshop and hands-on.

Age group: Please note that transistors is a complex subject and may be more suited for +9 year old.

Material: If you have a starter kit, bring it as well as your multimeter. If you don't have a starter kit, I can provide you with all the components necessary, but please email me a request (I need to order some parts). Approx costs $15.

Fee: None (unless you don't have a kit).

Collateral: There will be some collateral to download before the class. You can access it from box.com. Send me an email if you don't have an account yet.

Don't hesitate to contact me directly for questions, feedback or suggestions on making the classes better.

Awesome! My 8- and 10-year-old kids know what a transistor is and how to use one now! (Since this was our first non-soldering class, they learned how to breadboard a circuit form a schematic too.) I'm really thankful for Stephane Come's leadership.

Hi Stephane - I'd like to bring one more kid along on Saturday - is that ok? I can pay in advance on onsite. LMK.
    Thanks!

Stephane, is the hands-on specific to anything, or just whatever we've maybe done but unfinished, or perhaps that Parallax badge thing (?).

No, not this one - but yes, I will schedule an open session to work on anything (soldering, etc.) soon.
