What we're about

Welcome to Kingston Quakers

Kingston Quakers welcome and accepts everyone who is on a spiritual journey and support a wide diversity of identities. Quakers try to live simply and sustainably, promoting peace, equality and truth. Putting faith into action is central to our way of life.

Here are brief introductions to who we are and what we do. See the Quakers in Britain website for more information (link below).

Quaker faith is a search, not an arrival. We try to help each other work out how we should live.

How Quakers worship (you may prefer the word meditation) and what we mean by that:

There are no ministers or creeds. We first gather together in silence to quiet our minds – we don't have set hymns, prayers or sermons. In the stillness we open our hearts and lives to new insights and guidance. Sometimes we are moved to share what we discover with those present. We call this 'ministry'. We listen to what everyone has to say to find its meaning for us. Anyone can give ministry, including visitors. In the quiet we look for a sense of connection. This might be a connection with those around us, with our deepest selves, or with something else. As we feel this sense of encounter grow stronger, we may begin to see the world and our relationships in a new way. This may take us beyond our own thoughts and ideas to help us respond more creatively to the world around us.

You can sit anywhere you want. No seats are special or reserved. Chairs are arranged in a circle. This helps us connect with each another and reminds us that we are equals. The meeting starts as soon as the first person enters the room. Meetings last an hour (children go out to play after 10 minutes).

What we believe or don’t believe:

On the Quakers in Britain website, a group of 7 Quakers share what that means to them personally. It includes people who don’t have any great faith or belief; and people who do.

Our values:

Our values are about equality and justice, peace, truth and integrity, simplicity and sustainability. We don't have a fixed creed because we have found that the search for truth can lead us to new expressions of values as well as confirming existing ones. We say we are open to new light. We call our values 'testimonies'. Our testimonies encourage us to work for a more just, peaceful and sustainable world. It's not always easy to live this way, but as Quakers we try to encourage each other to keep trying.

You can also find out about how we are organized, how we conduct marriages and funerals, and our history.
