6:30 - Networking/Socializing 7:00 - General announcements 7:05 - Drew Oetzel (Tigera) - Kubernetes Networking Revealed & Network Policies For Security and Auditing Using Calico Kubernetes networking plug-ins and frameworks are necessary and integral to running K8s. This talk will explain how the two most common frameworks: Flannel and Calico work underneath the hood. Once we understand these basics we can then show some best practices and solutions to common gotchas with the goal of increasing the speed and reliability of your Kubernetes networking plane. Of course providing pod networking and facilitating service discovery are great! But open source Calico’s real super power is its ability to implement zero trust networking for security inside Kubernetes. The second part of this talk will show you the basics of setting up these policies. Equal emphasis will also be given to why implementing these types of security policies is so important to keeping our ever-expanding Kubernetes workloads secure. Drew Oetzel is a Senior Solutions Engineer at Tigera and has been working with enterprise software since the late 90s. Focusing on his recent experience, he spent seven years at Splunk, honing his security skills. Two and a half years at Mesosphere, then Heptio mastering the art of distributed systems, containers, and all that goes along with them. Outside of tech ask him about history, gardening, or what he's doing to try to curb his Reddit addiction! --- If you are interested in speaking at a future event, please reach out to us via meetup.com or tech404. 6:30 - Networking/Socializing 7:00 - General announcements 7:05 - Brian Akins - k3s - Lightweight Kubernetes https://k3s.io 7:15 - Josh Kurz - Production GKE setup Running K8s in production is hard, so many teams choose to move to hosted platforms. This does not necessarily reduce the complexity of running k8s in production. No matter the hosted platform chosen, there are still many facets of knowledge that are required to successfully run k8s in production. In this talk we will dive in GKE and learn about its many benefits and features. We will be discussing everything from how to setup networking, to how to lock a cluster down via RBAC so it's the most secure it can be. The goal will be for anyone to take away what it takes to run GKE in production for long term success. Josh Kurz is a Principle Architect at Weight Watchers. Josh got his start doing front end development with AngularJS and has worked at all layers in the stack. He has been working with K8s for close to 4 years now on teams that manage hundreds of clusters and thousands of different applications. Josh also likes Bob Ross. --- Please check in with security upon arrival. 6:30 - Networking/Socializing 7:00 - General announcements 7:05 - Jason Price - CI/CD with Drone 7:25 - Michael Ducy - Falco: Container Native Runtime Security. A CNCF project. Host intrusion detection (HID) has been around for some time. What if we rethought the problems HID solves in the context of Cloud Native platforms? What if we can detect abnormal behavior in the application, container runtime, & cluster environment as well? In this talk, we’ll present Falco, a CNCF Sandbox project for runtime security. We will show how Falco taps Linux system calls & the Kubernetes API to provide low level insight into application behavior, & how to write Falco rules to detect abnormal behavior. We’ll show how to collect & aggregate alerts using an EFK stack (Elasticsearch, Fluentd, Kibana). Finally we will show how Falco can trigger functions to stop abnormal behavior, & isolate the compromised Pod or Node for forensics. Attendees will leave with a better understanding of what problems runtime security solves, & how Falco can provide runtime security & incident response. Michael Ducy currently works as Director of Community & Evangelism for Sysdig where he is responsible for growing adoption of Sysdig’s open source solutions.
