OLANA STATE HISTORIC SITE
A stroll-like hike amid the grounds of Frederic Church’s Persian-style castle home and through the picturesque landscapes of pond, gardens, and woods created by this second-generation member of the Hudson River school of landscape painting. Olana’s carriage paths provide only a few miles of trail suitable for walking and cross-country skiing—but what miles! Although the ornate house itself (one of very few intact artists’ residences and workplaces in the country) attracts over 25,000 people a year, the trails seem to get little use. Because they are fairly flat, they make for easy winter walks and ski tours. It can be muddy in springtime and fall, when views of the river and the Catskill Mountains are at their best, though hardly as spectacular as in Church’s day, when he “cut” the forest to use scenery as a canvas to set against his own favorite points around Olana.
