    Thanks, Dorothy and Vinnie, for a beautiful moon and lots of nature pointers. Seeing a real woodcock was a thrill. Couldn't resist looking up the spelling of "serotinous." Found out some additional and more detailed info and botanical terms. Serotinous means seeds are late or delayed in their release and are released by a specific environmental stimulus, not necessarily fire. I guess, technically, the pitch-pine cones (and sequoias, e.g.) exhibit "pyriscence"in the event of fire. A resin actually seals the cone and melts in the heat of the fire, opening it for release of the seeds. Enough --- or more than enough --- from the guy who you all now know can mimic a mourning dove pretty well. Joe
