Film Happenings Around LA

Sometimes I get email about new film happenings around LA. If you want to announce or promote your film, that's fine, but it would be best if you announce it on this thread.

I got sent this yesterday. If you guys want to organize a group to go, that's cool, and this thread is a way to do that. But I'm just going to schedule meetups for the Pasadena area.

I am writing to tell you about The Philosopher Kings’ LA Premiere
and one-week engagement that will take place May 21-27 at the
Downtown Independent in downtown Los Angeles. An official
selection at the 2009 AFI/Discovery Channel SILVERDOCS film
festival, where it was nominated for Best Documentary, The
Philosopher Kings interweaves the gripping stories of eight
janitors who work for some of America's top universities. With
your permission, I would like to email a “save the date” to
you, as well as two follow-up emails with additional
information, for our event. We hope you will then pass these on
to the members of your group. It would be great if this was an
official event for your group as well.

This thought-provoking documentary shines the spotlight on
members of society who are often disregarded and ignored, and
gives us the opportunity to learn from those whom we would
never have otherwise taken a moment out of our day to
acknowledge. One of the janitors, Josue Lajeunesse, works as a
janitor by day at Princeton University and taxi driver by
night, not only to support his family in Haiti but also to
finance a clean water project he started in 2005 for his native
village of La Source. The Philosopher Kings partnered with the
non-profit organization Generosity Water (www.generositywater.
com) in 2009 to raise funds and help Josue complete his
project. Close to $15,000 has been raised so far. A team with
Generosity Water and Josue recently journeyed to Haiti so they
could evaluate the area and determine the best water solution
for La Source's residents. A portion of all proceeds May 21-27
will go towards Josue's Haiti Water project (www.aterproject).

The Philosopher Kings has been described as "terrific..." by G.
Allen Johnson of the San Francisco Chronicle and "brilliant..."
by Jason Silva, Host and Producer, with Current TV. The film
won the Emerging Cinematic Vision Award at the Camden
International Film Festival and a Special Judges Mention at the
Newburyport Documentary Film Festival. Filmmakers and/or cast
members will be in attendance for the premiere, weekend
screenings and closing night. Jason Silva, host and producer,
of Al Gore's Current TV ( is tentatively scheduled
to host the L.A. Premiere. There will also be a rooftop
reception at the theatre following the premiere and the
Saturday evening screening.
