2 Very Special Events: Venue in between LA & OC - Please Read!

Hi Sluggers!

vNext_OC is having 2 very special meetings (maybe 3) that I need to have volunteers to step up in planning. These are really happening so we need to be very prepared!

I’m thinking of the vNext_OC November meeting to be combined with a few different user groups because we’ll need a large venue & it can be half way between OC & LA. The speaker is Charles Petzold. You’ve probably heard of him, although he’s much older than some of you, but he’s a legend for developers. He wrote the first book (kindly called the programmers bible) for programming Windows. He’s now in the process of writing another book on C# C++ on Windows 8.

Same with the Feb. event we're doing, needing volunteers now. Brian Lagunas (from Infragistics, who wrote their Silverlight & WPF control suites & is host of xaml.tv, who spoke to us July 24th) is returning (our first open availability) in Feb. The audience really enjoyed Brian, if you weren't there) his expertise & how he brings it down to a level anyone can understand, & Brian is so nice he said he’d return in Feb. because everyone was saying to him they want him back, & to add more related content (MVVM, Prism, XAML, MEF, & the C# that goes behind it all for Windows 8).. So he & I were talking one day & I said “How about we make this a day-long even & cover all these related topics?” & he loved the idea. I got David Silverlight to agree to come & do the MEF part, and the 2 of them are discussing doing the entire day themselves (they’re certainly qualified!), but I’d like to have an expert on each topic to keep the day exciting. What do you think?

If we combine our fellow user groups for these larger events (or with Rockstars like Charles), we’d have more people to volunteer & do right by these speakers flying out on their own dime. What do you think about this?

There isn't much on either Meetup meetings mentioned above, but there is content. Charles event is here & Brian's is here. Please feel free to tell your co-workers and friends about these events, so they can to pencil in the dates, & ask if anyone would like to help with the events’ organization, which would range from doing things from home, finding sponsors (only for Charles), to getting a venue, etc. The more hands on deck for these things the better they go.

Scott Hanselman has agreed to speak at vNext_OC since our first meeting. I had him all set up to speak at a comedy club because he’s so funny, & calls himself a “failed comedian”), but at the time the board members said “Why spend so much money on the venue? Let’s pay ¼ the price & have it at the Hyatt”. So I didn’t have the spare time to arrange it all myself, so it hasn’t happened yet. But guess what? He recently spoke at a comedy club somewhere, so someone heard of the meeting or Scott scheduled it because he thought it was a great idea, which just means that sometimes you have to just “think outside the user group box"). I would have loved that to happen via vnext, but oh well. But, we could schedule a month in the summer (his schedule fills up so far ahead) and have Hanselman speak on MVC, (the Razor Engine & the ASP engine), & augment that with other people speaking on HTML5, CSS3, & JavaScript, maybe with a jQuery specialist also. I think Scott can probably get Phil Haack & some of his other friends to fill the other speaker slots, or I can.

What is your opinion on this all?

Please make sure to have you, your friends, co-workers, etc. pencil in those dates & RSVP so we know how large a venue we'll need (Charles Petzold Nov. 13th & the all-day event is scheduled on Meetup is scheduled for Feb. 12th, but we’d move it to a Saturday, so the planning need to begin now.) Please ask them to email [address removed] (I’m moving this weekend, & Cox doesn’t have service in that area, so my [address removed] won’t be working in a few days.)

Please, any volunteers that email me, please put "Special Events" in the Subject line of the email so I can quickly form the volunteer groups!

Thanks!

Kim Schmidt
