Overnight kayak camping on 18 Mile Island

  • Apr 25, 2014 · 5:00 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

Update: 24 Thursday.  Water levels and flows look good.  There is about a 1mph current.  This will be a good trip.  The water is still very cold, please wear your life jacket at all times.

We'll be camping out again on 18 Mile Island. The island is only about a mile from the boat ramp, so there's not a whole lot of paddling to do to get there. This is a great way to try out kayak camping just to make sure you bring all the right stuff, and that it all fits in your boat. And if it turns out you forgot something the boat ramp is just a short 10-15 minute paddle away. Once there we can hike around the island and paddle around. There are some old structures to check out on the island, and the narrow passage on the KY side of the island is a fairly scenic paddle. And if you just want to come out for the day and not camp that's great too. The actual time people arrive, and actual camping spots will kinda be up in the air. Last time we had people spread out along the beach, but within walking distance of the campfire. But the kayaks should be easy to spot. You can also call my cell to get an update as to where we are:[masked] . Keep an eye on this page for any updates. Had a great time as usual!!! Our paddle downstream ended up being 13 miles against a strong headwind and rough water. Needless to say we are pooped.

Turned around and am heading home to get my trailer. Something isn't right with Thule roof racks. Seem unstable. Rather not take a chance and risk putting anyone in danger. Won't make it now until 7:45:( so sorry!

Would hiking boots or tennis shoes be better for this island?

    April 25, 2014

    • Nate G

Hiking boots once you're on the land

Overnight for us always creates dogsitting issues. Is it ever OK to bring along a people-friendly/boat-friendly dog on these things?

    April 25, 2014

    • Mark M

With a few exceptions well-behaved, friendly critters are welcome. On the rare trips where pets might be a problem, that is generally mentioned up front.

      April 25, 2014

  • Kathleen W.

I have to cancel trip..bummer. I was totally looking forward to this and meeting everyone. I know you guys are all pumped up to having a great time. Enjoy and be safe! Kathleen

Just a bit of advice, once you get to the island, pull your boat up well away from the water. The water level of the Ohio can change by a foot or two overnight. I won't mention how I learned this.

Hey rain tomorrow? I have kayaks and will be ready to go early. I have more kayak gear and less camping. Can someone call me to prepare me on how to pack? Being a chic I want to bring 3 weeks of clothes' mg guitar, slim Jim's , sugar free red bull , some alcohol , plenty of water inhaler. Jacked tent .... What else do I need ?

    1 · April 24, 2014

    • Jennifer (.

I pack fairly light....will bring more than normal because of my kids.

      April 25, 2014

Tent, sleeping bag, eat a big meal before you leave, a few bottles of water. Anything else is just for fun.

    April 24, 2014

For all those asking, yes I want to launch around 5p but it's not realistic. I will be there and staying on the ramp a little later to get everyone on the same page and to camp. Remember PFD's are a must and the water is still really cold. Also, I will make a return trip with anyone who is not staying the night. If you have an issue or are late, I will accommodate you this trip. Normally I want everyone to be adults and on time. My number is 812 two zero seven 1544.

Is the KY ramp fairly secure? I was planning on bringing my trailer with extra boats. I know Amanda requested to borrow a boat....has anyone heard if she's still coming and still wants me to bring a boat for her? I thought there were a few others as well. I'd rather not leave boats unattended all night.

    April 23, 2014

4 regular kayaks, a tandem kayak, a fishing kayak, a white water kayak, a white water canoe, and 2 regular canoes.

Very new to kayaking and might turn up with a child. If someone see's me please be helpful! I will be in a panic! Not even sure about getting my 10 footer onto my car, let alone into the water. Will not be staying the night but would love to say hello and explore the island.

    April 24, 2014

    • Hilary H.

Thanks Jennifer. I only live 30 minutes away so timing isn't an issue for me, and that's about the time I would plan to be there.

      April 24, 2014

    • Hilary H.

I've only got one kayak so am only bringing one child with me.

      April 24, 2014

This is my first time kayak camping. Are we meeting at the boat ramp at 5 pm to paddle over to the island as a group?

    April 22, 2014

    • Jennifer (.

We are coming from Frankfort so I expect it will be a little after 5 before I can get there.

      April 24, 2014

    • Jennifer (.

I have no idea where this is so if there is anyone else that plans to go about 5:30 I'd love to paddle over with you.

      April 24, 2014

  • Bruce H.

I plan to show up at the ramp somewhere between 3 and 5 with my 2 person 14' canoe. Will launch ASAP once I have a paddler for the bow. Don't know how? You'll be the best d*** bow-paddler on the Ohio within minutes - guaranteed or double your money back. ;-)

    1 · April 24, 2014

  • Bruce H.

Just an FYI from a knowitall former Coloradan (we all know the type)... don't wear anything around a campfire that you don't want perfed by hot, flying embers. Those hi-tech pants and jacs? Leave 'em in the tent.
Also, will hold class for curious kids wanting to build their very own Weather Rock. They need to bring about 10 feet of para-cord, available at any hardware store.

    2 · April 23, 2014

  • Jennifer (.

I am having trouble finding someone to watch my kids. They are experienced kayakers and campers but not sure this trip is appropriate for kids? Can anyone offer advice?

    April 22, 2014

    • Nate G

Chuck, the fact that you're the main cause of the burns is a large portion of the problem. We will have a Doctor, Medic, and Combat Life Saver with us. If someone does die, it was truly their time.

There's a floating fuel dock with a ramp on the Indiana side about 2.5 miles downstream of 18 mile that I've used in the past. Used to be called Froggies. Hugging the bank where the water is nearly still makes it a lot easier to paddle upstream. FWIW.

    1 · February 7, 2014

    • Jim K

..better check the mileage. I think I was close. Also might want to contact them. There was a fee for parking.

      April 23, 2014

  • Stephanie

Ive looked at the maps and it seems pretty straight forward but just to confirm because ive never been to 18 mile island the camping beach will be on the side facing Indiana correct?

    April 22, 2014

    • Mark M

Correct Stephanie. For others, I'll play Captain Obvious. From Westport ramp head downstream( left :-) ). Stay close to the KY side to the island (short paddle, can't miss it). Paddle around the IND/N/right side of the island. Look for boats.

      April 22, 2014

    • Mark M

I only say because I remember, a few trips ago, watching a long time lacker and his lovely wife paddle 1/2 mi or so past the beach. They were hugging the shore. ON THE INDIANA SIDE!!

      April 22, 2014

Nathan, Thanx 4 the nod on the canoe. Can't wait!

    Speaking of pool..
Any particular level being used to determine go/no-go for the river level? I've never been to 18-mile, so have no idea how deep = no beach to camp on.

Newcomer from Colorado, married, semi-ret., CANOEIST, former 4-season backpacker, pro-photog. Looking for someone to be bow-man (or woman). So, if someone wants to go but has no water ride....
Q: IS THIS TRIP OK FOR A CANOE?

    April 22, 2014

    • Nate G

Perfect for a canoe. I'll be in my solo canoe

      April 22, 2014

  • Bruce H.

After my initial post I read on and saw a few folx without boats. I've got a spot and spare paddle for someone in the bow of my canoe and I gotta have somebody up there. 1st RSVP gets the job. Reply via [masked] or I might not see it.

Let me tell you a little something that you will appreciate down the road/river....as to camping on 18..(which I have done a lot)... and along the banks of the Ohio and elsewhere.
Find a garden hoe. Cut half the shaft off. Stuff it in the boat. Use it to level out the footprint of the tent and to dig a cat hole for other essential business.
Get laughed at by others....right up until the time...where they're going..."Hey dude can I borrow that?" :) Now it's not that everyone has to have one....but something to know.

    March 29, 2014

    • Chuck

There's actually quite a few hoes on 18 mile.
