Pio Pico's house in Los Angeles -

He was the last governor of Alta California when the state belonged to Mexico - gave his name to a famous street - and the house, a State park, is about to close for lack of funds....

Update 6/29/12...There will be a docent led tour for our History of Los Angeles Meetup group around 10:15am. Our tour guide is Julie. She is flexible about the start time, and can wait a bit until most of our members have arrived. TO FIND US JUST ASK FOR JULIE AND LET HER KNOW YOU ARE WITH THE HISTORY OF LOS ANGELES GROUP. The tour and the parking at the park is free. The tour is about an hour. There is a 15 min. film included in the tour.

Val, you can tag onto one of the tours by contacting Julie and finding out when they are.
As for us, off we go to the next place. Thanks, Rudy.

I was late, & missed a lot. I hope that this tour gets offered again. I reccommend this for others who didn't go at all.

Even though I was late, I really enjoyed the time I was there. The docent was VERY informative, & obviously enjoys being a Pico House Tour Guide.

Very interesting tour. Learned a lot about the ranch, the land, and the man, who at one point, was one of the wealthiest men in California - who lived through the Spanish, Mexcian and American periods of California/Los Angleles - and died penniless. Fascinating story

Enjoyable and interesting tour - everyone seemed to learn a lot and have a good time. The tour focused on the life of Pio Pico, his home and California history. The tour guide, Julie, was very good.

I think it's $3 for adults $2 for seniors. Does that sound right?

FYI their web site has a nice photo gallery - please see link below. Whenever I see a place like this I can't help but wonder how amazing Southern California must have looked back then. :)

Update: The Pio Pico State Historic Park will remain open until the end of 2012. The city of Whittier and some private donors came up with some funds.. Below is a link to the an LA Time story from June 13th, 2012. The June 30th meetup is a great idea. I'll try to make it if I can.
