L.A. Rock and Pop Choir Rehearsal

Hi Everyone!  Sorry for lagging in posting--I got a little sick over Thanksgiving, but am on the mend...anyhow, thanks again to those of you who made it out, and for being willing to sing in a complete group of strangers!  And for those who couldn't make it, no worries.  I'm pleased to announce another rehearsal this coming Monday December 5th!    First-timers welcome!

A few notes about logistics: I know there wasn't an ideal day/location for everyone.  And thank you to all who reached out to host the rehearsals at your house; how generous!!!  But for now, I've decided to have at least one more rehearsal at Robert's place (same place as last week).  Hopefully your offers still stand, and as we get to know eachother a little more, maybe we can make a group decision about where/when we want to meet on a long-term basis.

Also, we had touched on consistency of meeting (ever week vs. every other week)--I personally lean towards rehearsing every week (but am open to other schedules).  But, as we get going, we may be a little erratic, especially as the holiday season hits us...sorry in advance!

For newbies, here's some info: the L.A. Rock/Pop Choir is friendly and fun and we'll make some great harmonies together.  We're looking at doing some classics by artists such as the Beach Boys, the Mamas and the Papas, and Journey, as well as some works by newer artists such as Christina Perri, Idina Menzel, etc.  So come check us out - no auditions and no obligation! Water and coffee will be provided; you're welcome to bring a snack if you'd like, but no pressure.  Music will be supplied.

Please note, that after the first free rehearsal there is a $10 fee per rehearsal to cover the costs of sheet music, venue, and general supplies. But come sing with us for free during your first rehearsal and see what you think!

Hi Peter - it was nice to meet everyone last night and thanks for organizing this. I wanted to let you know that driving from Santa Monica, unfortunately it took me just over two hours to get there and is just not going to be feasible for me. I'll keep a look out in case it moves closer to this side of town!
    Thanks again
    Julie-Anne

      Two hours. Yikes.

Just throwing it out there: would people be interested in meeting at Madilyn Clark studios in North Hollywood if we were able to secure a room? It seems like it would be more centrally located to everyone (though admittedly not as optimal for our Pasadena-area friends). It's a shame to lose singers because of L.A.'s size and traffic.

Hey Peter, after a sleepless night and much thought I've decided this group is not for me. I'm so busy with my film and I never know when I can sing or when I'm supposed to be quiet. When people yell at me and speak disrespectfully at me because it wasn't clearly indicated that we were to be quiet it hurts. It really does. Have fun.

Peter is this 10 min further east? where is chapman woods?

Chapman woods is a suburban neighborhood about 4 miles east. The southeast corner, so to say, of the neighborhood is at the intersection of Rosemead Blvd an Huntington Drive. It's a couple of miles south of the 210, and about 3 miles north of the 10.

    Hi everyone,
I live about 10 minutes from Peter in Chapman Woods. I have an entire nightclub set up -- electronic drums, grand piano, keyboard, lighting and sound system, wireless mics. My band rehearses here -- my living room/dining room, which I've converted, would be big enough for everything we need. I also have tons of sheet music, chord charts, etc.
If you all wanted to come here, you'd be most welcome. We'd have to move the time to a Tuesday, however. We could certainly consider starting at 7.30.
And I can't be there tomorrow. I've been fighting a virus for days that won't quit.
    Peter.

Thank you but then I would have to drive back to Fairfax and then drive to Topanga. LA County is so huge.

Oh that's great Diane! Thank you for sharing! Would you mind bringing these sheet music parts on Monday? Yes Brian. It would be great if you wanted to bring your bass. Do you have a small-size amp by chance (at least for our Pasadena location)? If not, I have a speaker I could bring.

Not small enough for that location. Plus the bass would sound kind of empty without drums (which I also have). I need some portable gadgets from Santa 🎅🏼 this year or we'll need to practice in a bigger space like my house if anyone wants to travel all the way to Upland/Ontario for session.

I live in Topanga and hope that a future location will be a little more centrally located in the valley. I'll watch for more news.

I also live quite far from Pasadena, in Porter Ranch/Northridge off the 118 Fwy and Tampa. The North Hollywood studio was more convenient for me to get to via freeways, and a lot less mileage and time. I am still planning to come, but just wanted to put that out there.

Ok thanks Paula and Susan. Let's keep seeing who comes and what times/venues are amenable to most. Thanks for your willingness to participate!

P.S. regarding the distance of the Pasadena location, the rehearsal hours of 8:00 - 10:00 mean getting home around 11:00 at night. Any chance for an earlier start time?

    1 · November 30

    • Peter K.

Hi Susan! I think there's a possibility of shifting our start time to 7:30pm (for future rehearsals). Stay tuned.

First, Peace Train is a great suggestion! Uplifting, urgent, complex, and a great lyric! I had thought of Hey Jude, Bridge Over Troubled Water, and What's Up ( 4 Non Blondes) as alternatives we would all recognize and get us going! Maggie May and The Rising have also been good for me with audiences.
Mondays don't work for me, nor does meeting further west. I'm in session until 8.30 on a Monday, and my patient can't shift to another time.
I would ask that we change to a Tuesday, but then I realize that may not suit other people.
Any earlier than 8.00 would not work for me either, I'm afraid. I'm always in session until 7.15, except Mondays and Thursdays, when I'm later. I don't expect the group to accommodate to my schedule! Just a request/preference.
I do think we have a lovely group -- everyone is really keen and enthusiastic, and choral work is so much about supporting each other. I think we have that already!
See you on Monday -- at about 8.45.....!!!!!
    Peter.

Hi Peter! It was great to meet you three other night! Thanks for your response and your suggestions! I'm going to try and schedule maybe a Tuesday rehearsal for our next meetup. As for this coming Monday, don't feel bad about showing up late if you're up for it. I think I have an arrangement of Bridge Over Troubled Water; I'll try to dig it up. 4 Non Blondes is a great idea; I hadn't thought of that.

Here is an awesome song (Peace Train) where we can use great harmonies, meaningful lyrics, as well as hand-clapping. Please check out the video which shows the lyrics as well. The lyrics are very moving and timely right now in light of what our country is going through. ENJOY...and you'll be singing along too. Copy and paste into your browser.

Great song and lyric suggestions Peter! I agree that some of our song choices also have meaningful lyrics.
