Zipping the Hills II: the sequel!

This ride was so popular when we did it in November, it's time to run it again! There are many ways to traverse the iconic Hills, but for this ride, we're focusing on those on the south side. There are a lot of roads and sites up there that many (like me) don't discover until they're on two wheels.

RSVPs: The size of this ride is limited due to route and stops. See our RSVP Limit Policy if you have questions.

THIS RIDE WILL INITIALLY BE OPEN TO MEMBERS WHO DID NOT ATTEND IN NOVEMBER. We will open it to everyone if the ride doesn't fill up. If you attended in November, please do not RSVP until you receive a notification saying we're opening it to everyone.

RSVPs open Wednesday, 1/16 at noon.

Meet at Trails at 10:30. Come early if you want coffee, a scone, etc. Kick Stands Up (KSU) at 11am!

The route will begin at Trails, with a stop at the Hollywood Reservoir overlook. From there, we'll go to Mulholland Dr. and start zig-zagging the hills via Outpost Dr., Nichols Cyn, Franklin Cyn, Benedict Cyn, then Beverly Glen for lunch. From there, it's down, then to Bel Air and up Roscomare. We'll then head straight across Mulholland back to Hollywood for celebratory ice cream at Mashti Malone's!

LUNCH STOP: We will stop for lunch at Beverly Glen Circle in the Hills. There are several restaurants, two delis and a Starbucks, plus they will be having their Farmer's Market that day. You can also brown bag it if you like!

ROUTE MAP: http://is.gd/mNIdZB

This route includes some difficult terrain and sharp curves. We'll keep the pace fairly easygoing, though, and make stops when sensible. This is a more scenic/enjoyable cruise than an ass-hauler.

As always, please read our Policies and Group Riding Guidelines before joining a ride:

I didn't see who supplied the first aid kit. Anyone? Whoever it was gets a big gold star and our thanks! Two of us didn't have our kits with us that day! We've rectified this by putting together several kits so I will always have one as will our ride leaders.

    January 29, 2013

    • Jeff

Hey Eric that was my 1st aid kit, Andrew should get my bill sometime this week.

      January 29, 2013

    • Eric

Thanks, Jeff! We'll restock whatever you need. :)

Richard, I'll start a Discussion thread on this because it's of interest to everyone. I'll post a link here when done.

Monica and I would like to thank everyone for helping us out when our scooter lowsided on the gravel near Beverly Glen. Special thanks to Mercedes for the medical check and tips! We were very lucky to be riding with such a careful and conscientious group!

Glad you guys are okay. Minor crashes certainly don't feel so minor when you have one!

This is the final, actual, real route:
    http://is.gd/rhpvQs

Includes the, uh, improvised detour up Stradella Rd. past Stone Cyn. reservoir. That was so pretty, I think it'll become the actual route!

The biggest differences from the original route posted in the ride description is that we skipped Nichols Cyn. and did Outpost at the end of the route, which worked out well.

Thanks to all. The route was great. See you next time.

Another Great ride by Eric, and cool people.....

Fun ride on a scenic route (marred only by the gravel incident, but the group handled that well). Great company as always! And, surprisingly, the weather was excellent during the ride itself. Worth going through rain to get there and a few miles of dense fog on the way back. :)

Still raining here in Chino, and we were hoping to leave at 8:30 to be at Trails by 10:30. It doesn't look like the weather is going to give us a break out here. Looking forward to Zipping the Hills III.

      January 26, 2013

West Side participants: the group ride from Pann's (La Cienega and La Tijera) to Trails Cafe is still on unless the ride itself is cancelled. (0920 KSU, 0820 optional breakfast at Pann's.) Heck, even if the ride gets cancelled I'll still have breakfast there tomorrow morning anyhow! :) Details: http://www.meetup.com/LAScooterGroup/messages/boards/thread/30498322/#[masked]

Per the NWS: "A 40 percent chance of showers, mainly before 10am." The "official" ride should be dry, but there's a chance our trip up there might not be -- check the weather radar imagery in the morning before heading out. Dress (or at least pack) accordingly. Temperature should be around 60°F.

      January 25, 2013

  • Peggy

I've been following the weather updates throughout the day and I just watched the weather report on tv and they say it's going to be a 50% chance of rain in the morning and down to 30% by the afternoon. Being that the case now, I'm going to back off and ride another day. Sorry. I really want to go but I don't want to chance it with the possible wet conditions. Next time! Thanks!

    January 25, 2013

  • Claude

Hi Eric, Perhaps a later start time and maybe a shorter route given the later start time or weather is another option to consider. Weather.com says for tomorrow - a shower or two possible early with partly cloudy skies in the afternoon. High 66F. Winds SSW at 5 to 10 mph. Chance of rain 30%.

Or if tomorrows ride is postponed maybe someone can post a "Pick up ride" that starts at 12 or 1pm. I'd be there.

    Thanks,
    Claude

    January 25, 2013

    • David A.

The problem is that even tho the rain may stop in time, the hill sides drain water on to the Cyn. roads for days Making them wet and slippery.

      January 25, 2013

    • Eric

Good point, David. I'm looking at changing the routes. Depending on how things look in the morning, I may go check out a few streets before going to Trails, too. If the conditions are still pretty wet, we could wind up doing a much different ride.

Hi gang I will step aside since the weather looks crappy for tomorrow. I really want to enjoy this ride, and looking below into the valley or downtown LA or Culver City, or across where the mountains stand tall and beyond where more mountains march behind to meet the sky without worrying about the it-may-rain-it may-no dilemma. Too all of you folks ride safe and enjoy the trip.

    RIDE IS ON AS SCHEDULED.

If weather forecasts are accurate (which is not always the case), we should be able to take advantage of a break in the rain to do the Zipping the Hills II ride tomorrow.

    A few caveats:

    1. If it starts to rain, we may adjust the route or make alternate plans.

    2. We will likely be subject to more hazards (dirt and gravel in road, possible new potholes, etc.) on the route.

    3. The rain is supposed to let up by 9am. If you're coming in from far away and rain in the morning is a concern, please take this into consideration.

If any of these is a problem for you, please change your RSVP now (even if you're on the Waiting List) so others can attend. If you're on the Waiting List, please check your email and the ride page to see if you get added. We often have a lot of no-shows on days when it's cold or wet and we'd like to reduce that.

We WILL be doing this ride again as soon as scheduling allows!

I'm out, just for fun is not a good enough reason to risk a run in higher than usual potential for slick conditions.. You all have fun and I'll try and make the next one.

Forecast still variable, so I'm going to wait until tomorrow to make a postponement decision. Stay tuned!

Just cancelled to due to the weather reports and the distance we will be travelling to get there, so there are now 2 spots open :-) Ride Safe and we hope to you guys soon.

    January 21, 2013

  • Eric

There's currently rain in the forecast for Saturday. Because the forecast changes often this time of year, we'll wait as long as possible before determining whether to postpone the ride. Please keep an eye out for emails and posts on the ride page with any changes. If a postponement is necessary, we'll automatically move all the RSVPs and wait list to that new date, then send a notification.

    January 21, 2013

  • Eric

Since we have a waiting list, please change your RSVP ASAP if you cannot attend! Those on the list: RSVPs change often, so look out for notifications if you get added.

Is this open to 50ccs !?

    January 16, 2013

    • Eric

If your 50 will do 40-45mph and handle hills okay, it should be fine. The only "fast" section is Cahuenga, then back down Mulholland.

      January 16, 2013

  • Eric

Re: experience level and difficulty: Glad you asked! We've learned over the years that members are sometimes pretty poor judges of their own skill level. It's also something that we can't determine for others. We do our best to describe the various routes and challenges and provide maps so members can decide for themselves. But we're always happy to expand on that! This ride is not for brand new riders. You should be comfortable with tight turns and narrow roads (with a lot of potholes, some loose gravel) up and down some steep inclines. Our pace will be fairly moderate-to-slow; everyone should ride at the pace they're comfortable with.

    January 16, 2013

  • Eric

Sorry; RSVPs were supposed to automatically open at noon! They're open now. GO!

    January 16, 2013

Consider this my RSVP, as of 12:50 AM on 16 Jan 2013. Or I'll just come back later and check in. In either case, it should be a fun ride, and I'm looking forward to it.
