The Math and Magic of Wolfram Alpha

Hi all -- sorry for the repeat mailing. The new Meetup posting didn't "take" the first time. This one should work. ;-)

We are pleased to announce that Russell Foltz-Smith of Wolfram|Alpha will join us on February 18 to share insights on the technology behind the answer engine.

Please RSVP here:

The location - in Santa Monica - is TBD.

Wolfram|Alpha ( is a unique system that combines many cutting edge technologies to produce a Computational Knowledge engine. It uses a complex interaction between data, linguistics, computation and visualizations that results in the output of knowledge for use directly by end users or semantically by other applications.

In addition to outputting knowledge, Wolfram|Alpha requires the ingestion and transformation of existing knowledge into a computable format. This presents a unique set of semantic challenges.

Russell will review some of these challenges, as well as Wolfram Research's approaches to solving them and where they see things heading with Wolfram|Alpha and related technologies.
