In classical Roman religion, a genius loci (plural genii loci) was the protective spirit of a place. Kami (Japanese: 神?) [káꜜmì]) are the spirits or phenomena that are worshiped in the religion of Shinto. They can be elements of the landscape, forces of nature, as well as beings and the qualities that these beings express, and include the spirits of venerated dead persons. Landvættir ("land wights") are spirits of the land in Norse mythology and in Germanic neopaganism. They protect and promote the flourishing of the specific places where they live, which can be as small as a rock or a corner of a field, or as large as a section of a country.
These are just a few of the ways mankind has defined and worked with spirits of a place throughout our recorded history. Let's get together and talk about place spirits.
