Nerdy Witches discuss Genius loci and other place spirits

  • In classical Roman religion, a genius loci (plural genii loci) was the protective spirit of a place. Kami (Japanese: 神?) [káꜜmì]) are the spirits or phenomena that are worshiped in the religion of Shinto. They can be elements of the landscape, forces of nature, as well as beings and the qualities that these beings express, and include the spirits of venerated dead persons. Landvættir ("land wights") are spirits of the land in Norse mythology and in Germanic neopaganism. They protect and promote the flourishing of the specific places where they live, which can be as small as a rock or a corner of a field, or as large as a section of a country.

These are just a few of the ways mankind has defined and worked with spirits of a place throughout our recorded history. Let's get together and talk about place spirits. Study up on a culture or aspect of this interesting phenomenon and come to share what you've learned. The location and the activity are not yet decided. Recommendations are welcome.

This is a lovely large park in Whittier. The parking entrance is on Meyer Road and you will be able to find us at or near the picnic tables near that entrance.

Are you going to allow dogs at this event, or will it be dog-free? I haven't been to a meetup in ages and I would really like to come again, but I cannot come unless the event is dog-free.

I'd like to join in this conversation. Are we meeting at a coffee shop? I'd love that. Coffee and Witches are two of my favorite things.

I would also be interested in meeting at a coffee shop. Meeting at someone's house is OK only if it's a dog-free place. I cannot come to any event with dogs.
