What we're about
Are you unschooling/ homeschooling in DuPage or neighboring counties? Are you looking for social and extracurricular activities for your child(ren), including playdates, playgroups, field trips, clubs and park days? Are you looking to meet non-judgmental, kind, friendly and helpful families? Then this group may be for you.
We are an eclectic bunch of home educators living in DuPage and neighboring counties that value Play and Exploration. This secular group provides both unstructured and structured social activities, field trips and some group learning activities to families with children ranging in age from infant to older teen. Our activities, however, focus on the 2-10 year old range. Our members come from all over, from Chicago and Bensenville to Naperville and West Chicago. We also have a growing active group from Darien and Bollingbrook, and from Bloomingdale and Glendale Heights.
While being from all over, we strive to come together to share resources and support each other on the life journey of home education. There are tons of great resources in DuPage and its surrounding areas, and by sharing information and supporting each other, LEAP strives to help its members enjoy their local resources.
To encourage community, the LEAP meet-up group runs as a cooperative. Members are asked to host one event every 6 months. To make it easy for members, there is lots of information and support. There is no rush to host, and hosting can be as easy as bringing a snack to someone else's party. Unlike a lot of groups, we do deactivate inactive members on a bi-yearly basis so we have a realistic membership count.
To also help build a community, LEAP requires members to attend 1 event every 6 month. This is flexible for folks who are obvious members of the community that are going through a brief life interruption (baby, sick family member, trip, etc.) But ideally, members of LEAP are committed to being a participant in this group, rather than a lurking member.
For the overall safety of our members, we also ask that new members attend an event within the first 90 days of their memberhips.
We are also home to the LEAP Cooperative Playgroup. LEAP playgroup is a small, non-for-profit cooperative that meets bi-monthly at the Lombard Log Cabin to Explore and Play. Further information can be found on the discussion board, or you can contact Julie for more information.
To pay for the $180 yearly fees to use Meetup’s software, we encourage members to contribute $5-10 per family to help out. The organizer prefers to be given the fees directly, to bypass the 7% meet-up charge to use their payment system. Please make the payment within the first 90 days of your membership. If you are already a member, please make your contribution by June 1st of each year. Surplus funds will be used to buy supplies for a party.
