Join us for a fun and creative workshop where you will learn to dye your own garments!
For this workshop you are encouraged to rob your closet, hit the thrift shop, or order ready-to-dye garments from Dharma Trading. We’ll be dyeing natural fabrics using MX dyes. This means we can glorify your white or light-colored cotton, silk, linen, rayon, ramie, or bamboo garments with lovely colors that speak your language! (And for those who are interested in taking the Sewing a Basic Tunic workshop in October, we’ll also dye cotton yardage that can later be made into a tunic!) For each garment, we’ll fold, bind, tie, twist, clamp, and even stitch patterns into the fabric before dyeing. We’ll also address safety, as well as, many means of exploration. Class fees include dye for three garments (students may bring additional pieces at $8 each). You’ll take home items that are ready to be rinsed and washed (they’ll be contained in baggies to prevent spillage).
Please bring: three (3) ready-made cotton (or other natural fabric) garments, an attitude of learning and growth, your lunch and a snack. All other materials will be provided including: dyes, binding materials (such as rubber bands, strings, clothespins, clamps), gallon zip lock bags, tubs, measuring cups, and spoons.
Susan Lumsden has been dyeing fabric since the mid 90s and is well skilled in this realm. Her art quilts have garnered national awards and she has work in public, private, and corporate collections. Her enthusiasm is contagious and you’ll leave feeling confident to try it on your own!
This is a very fun, lighthearted class. Come dye with us!
This workshop is part 1 of a three-part class series (however, all workshops may be taken independently of each other). Part 2 is Carved Block Printing on Fabric (Sat., Sept. 21, 10am-3pm, $110) and part 3 is It’s a Start! Sewing a Basic Tunic (Sat., Oct. 19, 10am-4:30pm, $110).
