What we're about

Thanks to former Supervisor Ken Yeager these classes are funded by the county and are FREE for our students to attend. Unfortunately funding will run out this year, so if you intend to take the classes please do so soon.
Just a few things about our classes:

You can attend as many as you like, but you MUST attend them in order, i.e. you cannot attend a practice class until you've taken the basic class.

If you RSVP for a class and then cannot attend, please extend us the courtesy of changing your RSVP so we know how many to expect.

Please DO NOT just sign up for every single class every month and then not show up. After your third no-show you will be banned from the group.

Many of you are bringing guests who are not group members. That's fine, but if they're going to attend multiple classes we would appreciate it if they would join as members.

Regular classes are offered monthly, but we can also accommodate those who would like to take the class as a group activity. We already have several groups who take private classes together, so if you belong to a LGBTQ book club, bowling league, activities group, etc., contact us to book dates for free private classes for your group!

LGBTQ Basic Self Defense (3 hour class)

CrossFit San Jose

This class will teach several aspects of self defense – situational awareness, boundary setting, and physical self defense skills. It's important to learn how to avoid a potentially bad situation by using your awareness and boundary setting skills and we'll be discussing how you can effectively protect yourself by shutting a potential attacker down. You will also learn the basics of self defense: stance, strikes, kicking. We teach attacker disabling, so you’ll learn how to strike most effectively and how to target specific areas on your attacker in order to disable them and escape. You will also learn how to escape from holds and how to use kicking as a tool to keep an attacker at a distance. Most of all, you’ll gain the confidence to know that you can successfully defend yourself. Anyone can learn self defense – it has nothing to do with age or physical conditioning! *You must be 18+ to attend these classes. • What to bring Please wear workout clothes and sneakers. Sneakers are mandatory. In the summer you'll want to bring lots of water, as the building is not air conditioned. In the winter, you'll want to dress warmly. Certain escape moves and holds we work on are hard on hair, glasses and make-up, so students may want to forego make-up, keep hair styles simple, and keep in mind you may need to remove your glasses and jewelry. Please bring water! • Important to know PLEASE NOTE: YOU WILL BE REQUIRED TO SIGN A MEDICAL RELEASE WHEN ATTENDING THIS CLASS.

You'll learn how to defend yourself if you fall and how to get quickly to your feet in order to fight back/escape. • What to bring Please wear workout clothes and sneakers. Sneakers are mandatory.
