For all who came out to last year's impromptu Memorial Day ride you might remember that Paul couldn't stand a long weekend without a bike ride so he joined forces with Tom to organize an Impromptu ( i.e. short notice) ride for Memorial Day. Tom penned this ride as "Flushing Meadow's to Randall Island 4 Island Ride" and went to work mapping out one awesome ride. This ride was so awesome that recently Virginia, with a little coaxing, has gotten Tom to dust off his mental Que sheet to lead us again this coming Memorial Day weekend. In honor of this fun ride Virginia has also renamed it in Tom's honor (and rightly so!) as "FHTom's 4 Island Bike Tour" ...LOL, and Yes it's ON again for this year. Virginia and all the rest of us can only say isYAYAAAAAA!!!!
So for those that didn't make the ride last year you can always go back and look at the pics and just remember this; Tom didn't miss a beat with his knowledge, enthusiasm and assistance as we over came some major technical difficulties that could have really been a REAL pain in the butt for one of us. Yes, Tom was on hand to help save the day on a major McIver assist. The ride is a full day and starts at Flushing Meadow Park, an easy 6 hours if not more. With a little luck we might be able to slow down to savor some of that backyard BBQ and local cultural color that waffled through the air all last year and just wanted you to stop, make friends with strangers have a cold beer and a cheeseburger hot off the 'que.
This is NOT a beginners ride and participation is limited. Please do not RSVP if you are not sure you will attend. Last minute cancellations give the waitlist no time to plan accordingly and is not considerate to your fellow riders who are on the waitlist.
We will be riding through four New York Islands on this ride: Queens (part of the Long Island land mass of course), Roosevelt Island, Manhattan, and Randalls Island. It is what I like to call the TH 4-Island Bike Tour, LOL.
We will gather and start the ride at the Flushing Meadows Park and cycle via the 34th Avenue bike lane, which will take us to Astoria to get to Roosevelt Island via its bridge. The views of Manhattan from Roosevelt Island is spectacular, which we will enjoy while riding a loop around the island. Once that's done, we will cross the Queensborough Bridge into Manhattan, and ride north on the East River bike path up to the Randalls Island pedestrian bridge. Onto Randalls Island, we will ride via the new bike path before heading back to Queens.
There will be 6 big climbs on this ride, over the Queensboro Bridge, the Roosevelt Island Bridge, and Randalls Island bridge.
Coming back to Flushing Meadows Park, we will stop at 108th Street and Corona Avenue, which is an intersection full of eateries. Perfect for lunch. The Lemon Ice King of Corona is located there for a sweet treat after a nice 35 mile ride.
So to summarize, approximately 35 miles, some of which is on roads with motor traffic, 6 big climbs, hoping to finish in 6-7 hours (including time for lunch).
Lunch money if you would like to have something to eat near the end of the ride.
Bring a light bike lock so we can lock up our bikes while eating lunch.
Please consult this pre-ride checklist to ensure you are prepared for the ride: http://www.meetup.com/Westchester-Social-Cycling/messages/boards/thread/14413971
