Spring Fitness & Endurance Outing - a 7 week program

Come join L.L.Bean's Outdoor Discovery School Instructor John Mrdjenovich for a free seven week program designed to get you outside and increase you fitness activity.  Each week will have a different challenge with increased difficulty!

***Program Overview***
  • Starts March 15 Ends May 3  (skips Easter weekend)
  • As part of the endurance program, Weight will be added occasionally, according to and individuals strength and ability:
  • Designed at the beginner to intermediate levels
  • All fitness levels are welcome
  • Great for those who want to increase endurance or maintain weight

Participants are welcome to attend any or all outings. You do not have to participate in one to attend another. Participants are encouraged to come to all seven outings as each outing builds on the previous.

The routes will primarily be on pavement. The routes and locations are subject to change depending on conditions.

Good hiking shoes or strong athletic shoes with good support are recommended. Dress appropriately for the weather. These outings are rain/snow or shine.

• Water

Week 1 - 7mi
Week 2 - 10mi
Week 3 - 7mi
Week 4 - 12mi
Week 5 - 9mi
Week 6 - 7mi
Week 7 - 15mi

Minimum Age: This outing is open to all ages with the minimum age being 10. Children 10 to 14 years of age need to be accompanied by a participating adult. Children 15 to 17 years old can participate alone after their parent has signed the appropriate release form.

    You probably have aches by now. That's why it is so important for you to get out and walk today. You may not be able to keep the same pace however you need to get out and move today. Stretch well and drink plenty of water. "Excelsior"

    After reviewing all of the times I was very impressed with the outcome of today's walk. everyone came in at 17 minutes or less. This is a great start and we are well on our way to meeting our goals. Everyone needs to give themselves a pat on the back today. However we will not rest on our laurels. We need to continue to move the needle. Next week make sure you bring a back pack with at least 5 pounds in it. Unless I told you otherwise.
    Also as I stated when we finished this is about conditioning. You should be walking at least twice a week prior to Saturday's. Preferable days are Monday (4 miles minimum) and Thursday (2 miles maximum). I will push you an Saturdays however the other two days are on you. You have to want this. If you continue with the program you will need to do the extra work to condition yourself for the 15 mile walk. In the end this all about you. Last note drink plenty of water.

    Looking forward to getting started on our 7 week journey... As a reminder to all of those attending the weather is what it is. Unless there is lightning the show will go on. Please begin to hydrate on your own spread it out over the next few days. (watch the caffeine, and sugary drinks)
    Make sure that we are dressing appropriately for these events. (Loose light layers). Things that can be added and removed easily… The burning of calories will generate plenty of heat. (prevent overheating)
    Eating ... try to eat prior to the event at least 2 hours prior to start ... start getting in this habit now. As we advance this energy will be needed.
    Last note please arrive at the field NLT 9:45 am this will give you time to acclimate to the weather… fill out paperwork ... take care of any last minute adjustments. We will start promptly at 10:00 am ... warm up is 0945 to 1000 and then we get to work.... afterwards we will do a cool down
