L.L. Bean's Outdoor Discovery School's mission is to introduce a new place, or outdoor activity, in a comfortable atmosphere to anyone who likes to try something new. Experts lead every outing, and everyone is welcome, from beginners to the more experienced. We will meet to explore new outdoor activities, places, and meet like-minded individuals. We lead guided tours, free clinics, & lessons for the following activities: Kayaking, SUP, Hiking, Fly Fishing, Bicycling, Camping, LNT, Nature Photography, Video, and more.

Tent Tales for Tykes - Storytime at L.L.Bean

L.L.Bean Short Pump Town Center

Join us in our L.L.Bean Tent for storytime at your local L.L.Bean store! During each session, we'll explore a different nature or outdoor theme, followed by related activities, games or crafts. Recommended for children ages 3-6. Caretakers must remain on-site and are welcome to join in the fun or spend the time shopping. Registration is required.

Today's adventurers don't leave home without their phone for a good reason – they're incredibly useful for exploring the outdoors. Join us to discover all the great apps designed to heighten the enjoyment of your favorite outdoor activities. Our experts will showcase the best apps for your adventures, explaining what smartphone platform they use (iPhone and/or Android), and how to quickly evaluate and download them. They'll also show you apps for navigation, weather tracking, speed tracking, photography, video, healthy living, natural history information and much more.

Hike in the James River Park System

Needs a location

Looking for a place close to home to get some nature walks in Richmond's James River Park System offers miles of trails in the heart of the city. With more than 550 acres of islands and shoreline south and north of the river, there is something for everyone to enjoy. We'll meet up at different trailheads throughout the park and hike about three miles. Our guides will lead you through the trails and offer interpretive information at key points throughout the outing. ACTIVITY LEVEL: moderate. WHERE TO MEET: parking lot; look for the Outdoor Discovery Schools signs. WHAT TO BRING: weather-appropriate clothing (layers; no cotton), hat with visor, closed-toe shoes with good tread, snacks, water, personal medications. OPTIONAL RECOMMENDED ITEMS: sunglasses, camera, binoculars, towel and extra clothes and shoes for after the hike.
