Let's go ride a roller coaster!!

There is no need to RSVP "No".

Coney Island is a part of NY history.  We almost lost it a few years back.  But thankfully, they saved Luna Park.  So, we should go and enjoy what NYers and tourists from all over the world have enjoyed for generations!

On Fridays in June the park is open until midnight! Instead of trying to fight the crowds on the weekend, let's go on Friday night, June 21st after work, and ride the rides into the darkness!  June 21st is also the summer solstice, so it's fitting that we would do an activity that just shouts SUMMER!!!  Or is that everyone screaming on the Cyclone?!  Or are they warming up to sing me Happy Birthday (my birthday is the following week).

Prices can get expensive at the park.  But there is currently a deal running with Groupon. However, there is a very limited time for this deal, so you need to ACT FAST! Unfortunately, the Living Social deal already expired.

So, who wants to sit in the first car of the Cyclone with me?!?!

History of Luna Park

In an effort to revitalize the historic Coney Island to its once glorious past, the City of New York purchased 6.2 acres of land in November 2009 and quickly put out a request for proposals, welcoming bidders to submit their proposal for a state-of-the-art facility that would be complete by Spring of 2010.

After weeks of compiling ideas and researching information, on December 18, 2010 CAI submitted a 293 page proposal to the Economic Development Corporation of New York City. After a tight race, CAI was finally awarded a 10 year lease for 3 parcels of land which encompassed the 6.2 acres of land the City had previously purchased from a private developer. On February 16, 2010, Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Central Amusement International held a joint press conference to unveil plans for Luna Park, a new amusement park coming to Coney Island that very spring.

On May 28, 2010, after a 100 day challenge CAI proudly presented Luna Park. The first new amusement park to be built in Coney Island in over 40 years, complete with 19 brand new rides, 6 games, 5 food kiosks, and a retail location. During its first season, Luna Park created 247 jobs for the local community, and delighted 450,000 visitors with over 1.7 million rides.

Some new things to Luna Park this season ...

  • Cyclone Café, a full service restaurant located at the corner of Surf Avenue and West 10th Street. Cyclone Cafè offer Coney Island visitors balanced meal options and healthier alternatives, all within a unique environment which pays tribute to Coney Island's rich history with memorabilia and tributes from local residents and visitors from around the world.
  • In addition CAI celebrated its first anniversary in Coney Island with the grand opening of Scream Zone, an extreme park which features 4 adrenaline-packed rides that have never been seen before in Coney Island.

About The Cyclone ...

cyclone

The father of America’s roller-coaster revolution, and the big momma of Coney Island. The Cyclone made its debut on June 26, 1927. Start with a 85 foot tall, 60 degree drop and then shake, rattle and roll through 6 turn-arounds and 8 more drops. After you get swept away by the world famous Cyclone stop by our souvenir shop for a ride photo and an Official Cyclone T-shirt.

Ok, the details of  ...

Luna Park has rides that are described as ranging from Mild Thrill to Extreme Thrill.  We could try them all, or just the ones that are within your comfort level.  They have a couple of ways to enjoy the park.  You can buy "Luna Card Credits" in denominations shown below, which are used towards different rides (which range from 1 to 20 credits per ride).

1 Luna Card Credit$1.00

40 Luna Card Credits* (35 Credits + 5 Bonus Credits)$35.00

And as noted above, there is a current deal on Groupon for the unlimited ride for only $19. But once again ... you must ACT FAST!!!
