What we're about

The La Crosse Area Writer's Group (LAWG) is a small group of local writers that share their writing and humble critiques in order to better their work. All forms and genres of writing including prose, poetry, fiction, and non-fiction are welcome. If you would like the opportunity to read your writing aloud and receive critiques from fellow serious writers, then please come to one of our meetings!
MORE DETAILED INFORMATION: General groups meet on both the first and third Thursdays of every month at 6:30 pm in a 4th floor meeting room at Gundersen in La Crosse and on the second and fourth Saturdays of the month at 9 am at the Goodwill in Onalaska. The poetry group meets the first Sunday of each month at Pearl Street Books in La Crosse at 12:30 pm. Meetings generally run 2.5-3 hours, though you can come and stay for as long as you are able. At any given meeting we have 4 to 12 people in attendance. We start with some social chatter, but we stay focused on our writing; what we are working on, what we are submitting, successes, not-so-successes and the like. Then the moderator asks who has something they would like to share aloud. The moderator then figures out who reads and in what order. We try and balance the meeting so everyone gets a chance, and people who seldom bring anything get first opportunity, and so on. The writers try to bring copies of their piece for the group (not a requirement). We all listen and follow along, then we have a discussion about the piece. Some folks also make written comments to pass back to the author. The comments are, well, terrific. It has always amazed me that the members of this group, while being very honest, still manage to be respectful and helpful. We have a variety of people at a variety of skill levels and the group does a great job at naturally taking that into account. We have all kinds of people in the group. There are college students and retired professionals. Some of us have been writing for quite a while and some of us are just getting started. Some of us have been published and some of us are never going to try. We write novels, short stories, poetry, plays, essays and one guy even used to write a regular column on physical conditioning. Come visit us a few times and see if you like us. We'll be happy to meet you and hear your work.

Second Thursday Writer's Meeting

Gundersen Lutheran

The La Crosse Area Writer's Group meets to connect, share and critique the work of area writers in a positive, supportive and honest environment. We hope you can join us for this meeting! Members looking for feedback generally bring a small excerpt to share aloud with the group, usually something to the tune of 1-2k words. Folks generally bring around 10 copies if they can, so other attendees can follow along as they read aloud. If you're not up for that just yet, or just want to come and listen and see what the group is/does, please do come. We're a fun, quasi-sarcastic lot, and each meeting is a little different. We're a critique group, and we love to offer feedback and chatter with you about what's working in your piece and what you might like suggestions on. See you soon!
