October Book Group

For the October group, we will be reading Brain on Fire: My Month of Madness,, by Susannah Cahalan.

An award-winning memoir and instant New York Times bestseller that goes far beyond its riveting medical mystery, Brain on Fire is the powerful account of one woman’s struggle to recapture her identity.

When twenty-four-year-old Susannah Cahalan woke up alone in a hospital room, strapped to her bed and unable to move or speak, she had no memory of how she’d gotten there. Days earlier, she had been on the threshold of a new, adult life: at the beginning of her first serious relationship and a promising career at a major New York newspaper. Now she was labeled violent, psychotic, a flight risk. What happened?

In a swift and breathtaking narrative, Susannah tells the astonishing true story of her descent into madness, her family’s inspiring faith in her, and the lifesaving diagnosis that nearly didn’t happen. “A fascinating look at the disease that . . . could have cost this vibrant, vital young woman her life” (People), Brain on Fire is an unforgettable exploration of memory and identity, faith and love, and a profoundly compelling tale of survival and perseverance that is destined to become a classic.

Hi Fredda, I believe that at our last meeting it was decided to take a holiday break from book club until the new year. So be on the lookout for something to be posted in January.

I am not feeling well this morning so won't be coming after all. I really wanted to talk about the book! Also, based on what Fredda commented, I had thought we could talk about whether we should decide a month ahead on the book (so, this time, choose next month's and the month after, so then each time we choose a book, it is for two months ahead.) Just a thought. Hope everyone is well.

Ladies -- Sorry but I cant do this at my house this time. Ken & some guys are fixing our porch tomorrow, so it will be too crazy here. I will see you all at Panera tomorrow. XOXO

PS -- I have book suggestions: The Red Tent or Dark Places. Just some to consider....

No problem! I have read The Red Tent, but haven't heard of Dark Places. Sounds intriguing!

I guess between the time you have the meeting and the email announcing the new selection goes out, everyone reserves all the library copies?

    October 14, 2013

    • Karen

Certain books do have greater library availability than others. Some in the group purchase the hard copy or ebook. You are welcome to come to any month's meeting even if you haven't read the book, so you might want to do that to get in sync. Hope to see you at next week's gathering!

How far in advance do you post the book selections? Either I can't get the book from the library system because they are all taken and not due back in time for the meetup, or I don't have enough time to read the enitre book!! Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I LOVE to read and would enjoy joining in. Thanks!

Hi Fredda, The books are announced a month in advance. We pick the next month's book at the book club meeting, and then someone will post that information on Meet Up. So if our meeting is in October, we'll pick November's book at October's meeting. A day or two after the meeting, the book will be announced on Meet Up. If you've signed up for our Meet Up group, you should receive email notifications every time a Meet Up is scheduled. Hope that helps! Laurie
