January Book Club - Before the Fall

  • EDIT on 10/19: The date of this Meetup has changed due to the book's unavailability for most of us at the library. Hopefully by January, we'll have all gotten the book. Fingers crossed!

Just saw this book recommended by comedian Jim Gaffigan on his Instagram. Excited to read it! Thanks to Karen for the recommendation!

Here's the synopsis: On a foggy summer night, eleven people--ten privileged, one down-on-his-luck painter--depart Martha's Vineyard on a private jet headed for New York. Sixteen minutes later, the unthinkable happens: the plane plunges into the ocean. The only survivors are Scott Burroughs--the painter--and a four-year-old boy, who is now the last remaining member of an immensely wealthy and powerful media mogul's family.

With chapters weaving between the aftermath of the crash and the backstories of the passengers and crew members--including a Wall Street titan and his wife, a Texan-born party boy just in from London, a young woman questioning her path in life, and a career pilot--the mystery surrounding the tragedy heightens. As the passengers' intrigues unravel, odd coincidences point to a conspiracy. Was it merely by dumb chance that so many influential people perished? Or was something far more sinister at work? Events soon threaten to spiral out of control in an escalating storm of media outrage and accusations. And while Scott struggles to cope with fame that borders on notoriety, the authorities scramble to salvage the truth from the wreckage.

Amid pulse-quickening suspense, the fragile relationship between Scott and the young boy glows at the heart of this stunning novel, raising questions of fate, human nature, and the inextricable ties that bind us together.

Okay guys, what do you think? Since this book is hard to get right now, should we postpone until January? Hopefully by then we'll all have made it to the top of our waiting lists.

I think waiting is a good idea. I actually finally had the book come in but was away/busy, and missed it. I'm back on the list. Aside: Laurie, I tried to text you regarding the last meeting- that I couldn't make it in the end - but it appears to not 've your number any longer. Sorry about that!

Same here Cindy. I have been waiting and waiting for this book from a Morris County library too. There are hundreds of holds on this book. What makes it so in demand???

Noah Hawley is the author. Based on the Morris County waiting list I've seen, if you plan to get this from a Morris County library, I suggest you put in a request for the book ASAP.

This sounds really interesting. I just finished reading The Woman in Cabin 10 and loved it and this sounds almost like that one. I'm going to start a buddy read on Dante Divine Comedy in September which should end at the end of September so if I can bring myself to read this one I would love to come. I'm going to say yes for now .... fingers crossed.
