Bike The Drive!

  • May 25, 2014 · 5:30 AM

Sunrise on Lakeshore Drive—car free! What could be better?

Whether you’re new to biking or you’re a seasoned veteran, you’ll find MB Financial Bank Bike the Drive an event to remember—nearly five hours of car-free riding while enjoying breathtaking views of the city and the lake. Don’t miss the one day of the year when bicycles reign on Lake Shore Drive.

Plan on arriving early! The event begins at 5:30 a.m., and we will try to starts close to 5:30 as possible. The earlier you start biking, the more you'll be able to enjoy, and the fewer kids will be out then!

Registered participants with rider numbers can start the ride at:

>> Columbus Drive and Jackson Drive

>> Bryn Mawr rest stop

>> Museum of Science & Industry rest stop

>> Fullerton check point

>> Oakwood check point

The round-trip distance encompasses 30 scenic miles, with the northern turnaround point at Bryn Mar Avenue and the southern turnaround at 57th Street. Bike as little or as long as you like during the event!

Feel free to take a break. There are three rest stops along the route where light snacks and water are provided. We provide the water, but please help keep our waste to a minimum by bringing your own water bottle.

You don’t have to start there, but the live music, breakfast and sponsor contests may entice you to end your ride at the post-ride festival at Butler Field near the central rest stop.

All riders receive a rider number, helmet number and wristband. These items MUST be visible while bicycling on Lake Shore Drive and shown at checkpoints and rest stops along the route to show you are a registered participant.

Once we see how many riders from LCBG are going, we can TRY to coordinate car pooling, caravan, meeting place etc.

Can some you BTD veterans let others know where you have parked in the past? Last year was my first time, and I parked at my friends Condo and rode from there, and never met up with the group. I think Last year they followed/car pooled down to the ride.

They mail it out mid-May. If you selected to have everything mailed out (including the shirt) I seem to recall it comes a bit earlier.

I got my pack in the mail a couple of days ago.

I will not be able to attend :-( but for those of you who would like to hook-up pre-ride I would suggest meeting near the registration tents about 5:15 am and then moving to the Jackson and Columbus start point as a group. If you want to meetup with others pre-ride, please comment so others will know to look for you. Also, if people are interested in carpooling or caravanning downtown, comment as well so you can link up! This is a great ride to do as a group but the logistics are a bit of a challenge!

So maybe everyone should plan on heading south initially - that way, odds increase on finding other members. Also the nicer of the two legs of the ride if you're only planning on doing one!

I'm expecting to park at McCormick Place. Pam, I'll call you when I arrive.

Can we register day of at the event? I cannot find any info on the website in regards to that. I have always pre-registered in the past but have come close to getting burned by the weather so was planning on registering at the event this year.

Is this group meeting to ride together before the evnt? Where and at what time?

    May 15, 2014

    • Kathi T.

I think we are still trying to work that out - will post.

      May 15, 2014

    • Kathi T.

No pre-ride ride, but I would suggest that anyone who wants to ride together with other LCBG members comment that here and then meet at the registration packet pickup area at 5:15am - you can then all move to the Jackson & Columbus start point together.

unfortunately, we all registered at different times without the group discount.
