What we're about

CRITICAL THINKING is disciplined thinking that is clear, rational, open-minded, and informed by EMPIRICAL evidence. An integral part of the scientific method has proven to be our only tool for gaining RELIABLE knowledge. We want to promote that reality, to help each other become better at combating the nonsense that so frequently permeates, and damages our vulnerable existence.

For a more detailed definition: The Critical Thinking Community

HUMANISM is a philosophical and ethical stance that emphasizes the value and agency of human beings, individually and collectively, and generally prefers critical thinking and evidence (rationalism, empiricism) over the unthinking acceptance of dogma or superstition.

This group is for people who embrace our most reliable methods for gaining knowledge: logical, scientific assessment of empirical evidence. All knowledge comes in degrees of certainty. If a speculation provides no sound, empirical evidence, it's just speculation. If a hypothesis doesn't match with experiment, it's wrong. A consensus among experts is extremely valuable and almost always represents the most reliable knowledge but if sound, valid, repeatable experiment shows it's wrong, experiment wins.

In a world where people believe in all kinds of things for all kinds of reasons, it's easy to feel alone. We want to learn from each other and be part of the solution to the problems faced by humanity. And it's just nice to have an intelligent conversation sometimes!

The primary focus of a Recovering From Religion support group is to provide ongoing and personal support to individuals as they let go of their religious beliefs. This transitional period is an ongoing process that can result in a range of emotions, as well as a ripple effect of consequences throughout an individual’s life. As such, the support meetings are safe and anonymous places to express these doubts, fears, and experiences without biased feedback or proselytizing.

We are here to help each other through this journey.

There is no cost to attend this support group but, if you feel so inclined, donations can be made at www.recoveringfromreligion.org/donate

If you find you need to talk with someone before the meeting date, RfR has a hotline and online chat for that express purpose. Call (844)[masked] to speak with someone. Go to www.recoveringfromreligion.org and click on the green chat bubble in the lower left corner of the site to chat online.

If you are in need of professional help, we can offer the Secular Therapy Project to provide options to connect with a professional therapist. All therapists have been thoroughly vetted by our organization and offer only evidence-based and non-religious treatment. Connect with them at www.seculartherapy.org.

Like what RfR does? Why not volunteer! There are quite a few options. Head over to www.recoveringfromreligion.org/volunteer for more info.
