ARIZONA / COLORADO EXPEDITIONARY OP

  • May 17, 2014 · 8:00 AM

Land Ops Advanced

OVERLAND EXPO &
Monument Valley Recon

Land Ops will be at Overland Expo (expo site here) on Saturday and Sunday near Flagstaff Arizona.

Monument Valley trip will be launched from Flagstaff, Arizona after Overland Expo wraps up. We will depart on Monday morning and head to Monument Valley for a few days, exploring the area and planning future ops for this area.

UPDATE MAY 13, 2014
The recent trip itinerary which was recently sent has been changed.
The Colorado leg of the trip will not occur due to lots of recent snowfall which will keep most of the higher altitudes closed. We'll get into Colorado on another trip.

For those who are not attending the OVERLAND EXPO and you want to go to Monument Valley plan on meeting us at the Safeway Parking lot in Flagstaff on Monday morning 9:00 AM.

I met 14 Land Ops members at the expo (some did not sign up on the Meetup but still went). I assisted Russ Chung at the Jeep Expeditions booth for two days. On Monday we had three of us that opted for the extended trip to Monument Valley and Utah. Check out the photos I'll load today. We scouted many areas for a multi-state op next year.

The trip was awesome. We have some great ideas for the 2015 Overland Expo.

I wish I could have made it. I had a 5500 mile trip to watch my daughter graduate. We did get to spend two days in Bryce Canyon and two days in Moab. We missed you guys by a week.

Members who RSVP'd YES and did not check in with me have an official warning notice. You missed an awesome trip and your membership status is now "on probation".

Still at EXPO, planning to meet at safeway store in flagstaff tomorrow at 9:00 am. Did you receive the info with the address?

Hi gang! Down here at the Expo and would love to say hi. Do we have a net setup?

    May 15, 2014

The Overland Expo 2014 Event simplex frequency is 146.46. I will try to reach you on both frequencies on Friday morning.

I may be back in for a Monument Valley run. I'll do the best I can to make it. Probably show up Monday afternoon sometime.

Just got shocking news that my sister-in-law died from colon cancer at the weekend! she was in her early 60's. She was only diagnosed with it a week ago. Sorry guys, family needs me.

    May 12, 2014

    • Kenny M.

Sorry to hear Andy, you've been dealing with a lot recently, hope things get better, prayers and wishes to your family.

      1 · May 13, 2014

    • Andy S.

Thanks Kenny, yes there has been a lot of bad stuff lately. I don't have a passport at the moment so there's not a lot I can do. My brother has his 3 kids to support him, so I'll Skype, etc, but I won't be going over there.

      May 13, 2014

  • Chris D.

Last trip itinerary I sent has changed. I've been updating with everyone this week and it seems we'll be going from the Expo to Monument Valley on a shorter version than originally planned. Too much snowfall in Colorado. See the changes above. For those who go with us to Monument Valley we won't keep you out as long. After MV I'll be heading back to California. I'll traveling lighter...no trailer this time.

Regrettably Chris I to will not be able to make this trip,
I will see everybody on the next Op!!!

Sorry folks. Too many things popping up telling me I shouldn't be going on this trip. I've been looking forward to this for a long time.....being responsible stinks sometimes.

  • Russ C.

The 3rd week of May might be too early to go to the Silverton area; some of the best trails might still be closed. What's plan B? Four Corners? Lake Powell? Arizona Strip?

Was so looking forward to getting out with the group. Especially this trip back in my old stomping grounds. Spent almost a year living in Durango and exploring the area most weekends. Not going to make it back to Cal yet as I'm still working in Puerto Rico. Have fun and take lots of pics and video as I'm sure you will.

    May 12, 2014

  • Russ L.

Guys - so sorry. I can't do a week. I will look for you guys and come say hi, for sure. I'll be down there starting Thursday night. LMK if you're standing up a net and I'll jump on as I get close.

    1 · May 12, 2014

  • Kenny M.

OMG, the twists and turns in life. Well, I finally got the pink slip from work on Friday, it was expected but I did not expect it right before this Op. Because of this, I will need to be home during the week to take care of the transition and other stuff. I will be going to the Expo on Saturday but returning back home Sunday. On a good note, this change will be better for me in the long run, allowing me to be more active in camping, events etc. Changing RSVP but I'll see some of you at the Expo!

    May 12, 2014

PS Don't forget the Overland Expo is this weekend at Mormon Lake, just south of Flagstaff.

    May 11, 2014

  • Kenny M.

yay! I have the week off. More than likely I won't leave until Sat or early Sunday to rendezvous at the expo.

    May 7, 2014

    • Chris D.

That's good news Kenny, look forward to a very unique trip.

      May 10, 2014

  • Bryan

I've not posted anything recently as I didn't think I had much to ad to the conversation. I am still planning to be at the expo and travel with you all on this expedition to wherever we end up. My 12 year old daughter is trying to back out so I may end up flying solo....is anyone else planning on bringing their kids along?

    1 · May 8, 2014

    • Chris D.

Hi Bryan, Whether flying solo or with your daughter you should have a nice time. We're not planning anything extreme. We'll be doing some simple ops which always involve off road exploration, radios, and navigation.

Coconino County, AZ bans ham radio use while driving.

Coconino County covers the area from Sedona north to the Utah border and east to Winslow, to include Flagstaff, Grand Canyon National Park, and the site of the Overland Expo. This could put a crimp into any geotactical exercises that we want to do in that area.

    • Chris D.

Hi Phin, We're currently planning to depart to Colorado from AZ on Monday after the Overland Expo and return on the weekend. Saturday or Sunday. You can hook up for the whole trip or part of the trip.

      March 26, 2014

Planning to help man a booth for JeepExpeditions.org , Land Ops vehicles may be on display there as well. After the OVERLAND EXPO we'll be heading to Colorado (south area around Silverton) for a few days of adventure trail driving. This will be a unique trip. Running as a recon with possible multiple teams.

Right now the Alpine Loop is closed for the winter. Normally, it would open about mid-May but if there is a late Spring snowstorm it might not be open when we get there.

      February 22, 2014

    • Bryan

I've spent several years archery hunting Elk in the Silverton area. Beautiful country but we rarely had to lock in the hubs. It was amusing to see the roads we had driven while looking for new elk country show up on the "I survived x trail" t-shirts in the local gift shops. We didn't know we were doing anything worthy of a t-shirt while simply scouting for elk. Again, beautiful country... not rock crawler type stuff. One year we accidently went backwards on the course during the Colorado 500. Red mountain I think it was. If your looking for ideas for new spots, we got into some great country once in the Carson National forest just west of the Jicarilla res and South of the Colorado boarder. Lots of wild mustangs and high desert washes.

Just came back from 12 days of back country exploring in BC. We ran Harrison, Whipsaw and Apex in that order. When it comes time to venture into Canada I can offer some info on some very amazing trails.

I think the 4 corners area would be a great place to do our first expedition. Starting in Arizona at Expo and then hitting Utah, Colorado, New Mexico and then Back into Arizona on our way back to California. You've got desert and mountains and some of the most beautiful scenery in the country all in that 4 corners region. Two or three days in each state we could make it a loop starting and ending in the Flagstaff area. I'm up to help plan it Chris.
