Skills Practice: Beginner Rappelling

  • Nov 29, 2013 · 8:00 AM

This session will be conducted by one of our distinguished alumni (John "Snafu" Mueller) and will cover beginner topics on rappelling.  It will be field work at an outdoor location and attendees will practice the material covered (yes, you will rappel).  You will need a helmet, harness, and a rappel device with a locking carabiner.  Let us know (via your answers to the questions) if you need us to supply that gear.

He also plans to conduct a follow-on session the next day (Advanced Rappelling).

Please remember to answer the questions after RSVPing. If you are using a phone, the questions will not appear. Therefore, please check back again to answer the questions.

To participate in this outing, you must be a current, paid member of LVMC. You can obtain a membership via this link: http://www.lvmc.org/w.... The fee is $40 per year for a family/roommates or $30 per year for an individual. Please contact your organizer if you have any questions.

About the waiting list: We will probably raise the limit to 15 really soon, but I'm not sure about more. Several folks usually cancel at the last minute on these meetups, so that may help.

i can probably borrow susan murphy's helmet and harness. if you can suggest a suitable rappel device, i'll look into buying one. thanks!

Lorraine, get a Black Diamond ATC Guide. It will do what you need for the rappelling class, future rock climbing, canyoneering, and you can belay off an anchor with it to when you get to that point.

      November 23, 2013

    • Lorraine W.

bart, too late, already have the ats. and if i'm reading the directions correctly, you can belay off the anchor with it as well. i'm still bringing susan's atc, so i'll be prepared for anything :))

we will practice the guides rappel system. in short learning to rap with a back-up. i will teach 3 different friction knots, prussic, autoblock, and kleimheist. i will instruct rappelling with a belay/descending device, a munter biner, and carrabiner break. if you do not own a rap/descending device, we will have extras. do not buy 1 yet, wait until after clinic to buy 1.

Is there any way to include my 16 year old daughter?

    October 23, 2013

    • Lawrence F.

Thank you. She has her own harness, I would just need to get her a helmet and descender. I have yet to take her outdoors but we do indoor rock climbing together.

      October 25, 2013

    • Richard B

Great. We have helmets in the club gear, and can provide a rappel/belay device.

      October 28, 2013

  • Laura N.

    Is there a location yet?

    October 20, 2013

    • Richard B

Probably at the Red Rock Canyons. We will send out an email to the email address you provided to the meetup software with all of the meeting and outing details. We will send that on the week of the training.
