DAY HIKE: Wheeler, Jeff Davis, Bald (3 of the LVMC 50)

  • Jul 26, 2014 · 5:00 AM
  • TBD

Total Distance: 12 miles
Total Elevation Gain: 5,000'
Altitude: 9,500' - 13,063'
Terrain Description: trail to the summit of Wheeler Peak then some exposed class 2-3 to/from Jeff Davis Peak.
Approximate Hiking Time: 8-10 hours

This is a one-day trip that plans to leave Las Vegas on Friday evening, and car camping at the Great Basin National Park. On Saturday, we will get an early start, head up the trail and take a side detour to Bald Mountain. Then we will continue up the trail to Wheeler Peak (the second highest peak in the state), then traverse a class 2-3 ridge to Jeff Davis Peak. We will either traverse back to Wheeler Peak and descend the trail or descend off Jeff Davis to the campground.  We may also go in reverse order by ascending Jeff Davis, then heading to Wheeler, and go to Bald during the descent.

Wheeler Peak is one of LVMC's Classic 50 Peaks and it is also on the Sierra Clubs DPS list. Jeff Davis Peak, and Bald Mountain are all on the LVMC Classic 50 list.

Please remember to answer the questions after RSVPing. If you are using a phone, the questions will not appear. Therefore, please check back again to answer the questions.

Is anyone leaving later than 3PM? The earliest I could do is 5 PM without getting time off

Disregard. I got the time off

Hi, Brett and Chris -- I was to be back home this (Thursday) afternoon, but alas one big leg of our flight back was 86-ed, so we are laid over in Frankfurt tonight and won't get to LAS until late Friday -- ergo I must forego this great adventure...apologies, and happy hiking!!

I am looking at potentially starting on Jeff Davis first. I have tracks; however, I have been informed that it is better to ascend it than descend.

Brett, I went up that way. It's a lot of creepy, shifting talus, but angling more to the left keeps it from being as steep.

Thanks Joel. Harlan told me that it is worse descending. Figure if I did JD first, then the day will get easier

I am planning on leaving Las Vegas around 3pm. It takes about 4-4 1/2 to get there, not including stops. I had liquid spilled into mu vehicle last weekend and it took me a while to clean. If you ride with me, be careful. Will send meetup info soon.

Hey, how early are you planning on getting up on Saturday? Considering the hike, it seems like it needs to be quite early

      5. I am most likely not doing Baker. Depends on how the day is going. I have another hike I am doing Sun morning in LV.

I will be getting off of work at 1pm on Fri, the 25th. I plan on leaving between 3-6pm to drive out there. I wanted to coordinate with times so that we can carpool. Let me know what works for you. Thanks.

Amber & I took an impromptu trip up to Great Basin to get some altitude training for the 14ers in Colorado we were planning to do this weekend. Bagged Wheeler, Jeff Davis, Bald & Buck. There is still some snow on the ridge, but it'll be gone by the time you get there.

My stats for this trip were 16.8 miles, 5673' of gain, and 12:41 min total time, including summits (10:49 without the summit intervals.) Most of the day is spent above 12,000'. So it is going to be a full day. I highly recommend bringing headlamps with fresh batteries, and even spares just in case. Good ridge hike!

At the time I did this, I was both uninjured and fit. I also ran the last three miles. And we were pushing from the lake on even before the running began. So keep that in mind as far as planning.

Okay, so Kyle, three epic trips for me makes a charm (apparently)...bring on the 20 hour day!!!!

Because Bake adds on about 6-7 hours onto the hike, the decision to do that will be made after hiking Jeff Davis.

Brett...life is too short to be so serious silly...did you not see my 'LOL?' That 'LOL' meant I was soooo teasing you. I will refrain from all future 'Tease Brett Opps.' ;)
