2 DAY TRIP: Porter Peak and Sentinel Peak

  • May 17, 2014 · 2:30 PM

Total Distance: 11 miles+
Total Elevation Gain: 5000'+
Altitude: 7000' - 9634'
Terrain Description: Off-trail, class 2
Approximate Hiking Time: 9 hours+

This is a day hike to summit Porter Peak (9101') and Sentinel Peak (9634'). Both peaks are on  the Sierra Club DPS (Desert Peak Section) list. They are located in southern Death Valley, just south of Telescope Peak.

It will be about a four-hour drive to the trailhead. There will be some driving on very rough roads, so we will need high-clearance 4WD vehicles. Distance, elevation gain and hiking time are based on us getting to 7000' along the road. If we cannot get that far, expect significantly more distance and gain.

The plan is to leave LV around 2:30 Saturday afternoon, drive to the trailhead and carcamp there. It will be primitive camping (we will be camping along a dirt road). We will begin the hike very early Sunday morning (5:00 am) and follow a ridge up to Porter Peak, then traverse a ridgeline 4 miles over to Sentinel Peak, then retrace our steps. The ridgeline involves some ups and downs but the terrain appears to be fairly straight forward. After the hike, we will drive home.

Please remember to answer the questions after RSVPing. If you are using a phone, the questions will not appear. Therefore, please check back again to answer the questions.

To participate in this outing, you must be a current, paid member of LVMC. You can obtain a membership via this link: The fee is $40 per year for a family/roommates or $30 per year for an individual. Please contact your organizer if you have any questions.

The least photogenic hike of my life. Thanks for the trip just the same, Joel. ;)

A great group...all of the usual DPS suspects. Yet another great adventure, not the least of which was the drive!

How hot is it going to be?

I was not convinced that the bench-marked Sentinel was the true summit-- there is a peak about 0.5 km SW that looks as high. I would guess someone has used a level to check, but the SW peak sure looked as high.

No worse than class 2, mostly class 1; but the last 300' drop before Sentinel doesn't quite "roll."
