2 DAY BACKPACK: Ruby Dome

  • Oct 18, 2014 · 6:00 AM

This is a trip to the summit of Ruby Dome, an LVMC Classic 50 Peak, and the highest point in Elko county.  For peakbaggers, it is also on many other lists including the DPS list, the 4000' prominence list, Nevada Peaks Club list, and more.  This is often done as a (long) day hike, but I'm breaking it up into a backpack because Griswold Lake is one of the most beautiful places I have ever camped.

Note: The trailhead is about 450 miles (7 hours) from Las Vegas

Total Distance: 14 miles round trip
Total Elevation Gain: 5,400' (about 3,200' to campsite at Griswold Lake)
Altitude: 6,000' - 11,387'
Terrain Description: A trail (class 1) to the lake, class 2-3 off-trail from there to the summit
Approximate Hiking Time: 12 hours

To participate in this outing, you must be a current, paid member of LVMC. You can obtain a membership via this link: http://www.lvmc.org/w.... The fee is $40 per year for a family/roommates or $30 per year for an individual. Please contact your organizer if you have any questions.

My first trip with LVMC and it was excellent. Eric is a great trip leader and I look forward to joining him on a future trip. The other hikers were all interesting and fun providing great company to share this adventure. The Ruby Mountains beauty never disappoints. Thanks Eric, Jeff, Ken, Al, Kay, Bob, and Mary for sharing this wonderful trip.

cool. just got back into town. looking forward to this. shall we restart the conversation on transportation? i'm still willing to drive, and take 2-3 more.

Are you planning to hike in Saturday, hit the peak, camp that night and hike out Sunday morning? Or spend Saturday at the lake, hit the peak on Sunday and hike out?

    September 29, 2014

    • Eric K.

Given the long drive, the plan is to drive there Saturday morning, hike to the lake and camp in the afternoon, hike to the peak Sunday morning, break camp and hike out in the early afternoon, driving home after that.

Due to the weather, this trip has been rescheduled for 10/18-19.

If you wait till December, the chance of rain will be minimal.

    Hi Eric,
Just FYI. My family has a house very near the trailhead and we have access to the gate key. If anyone needs a shower or a bed afterwards or if you need the key don't hesitate to let me know how I can help.

i can highly recommend laura's mom's hospitality. we stayed there a few weeks ago when we did ruby. the house is full of history, in a beautiful setting, and a very short drive to the gate. plus, shower!

does that still work if i wear a metal collander on my head?

      September 22, 2014

Hye Young and Michelle -- both of you need to email me: jeff at jeffcasey dot net. by the way, do either of you drive a clutch?

Dan, Where are you heading to after the Ruby Dome?

      September 20, 2014

    • Dan B.

Kay my goal was to keep working on my NV county HP list. Up north I need Desatoya, Diamond, Granite and Star peaks. I'm beginning to rethink plans and priorities, however. My key passion is the Calif P2k list. The front runners list for that has been heating up lately. Quite competitive. Two Arizonans passed me briefly on this list (Bob Packard and Andy Martin) and I'm struggling to stay #2. I'm likely to bail on this Ruby Dome outing. I've summited all but ten of Calif's P2K's, and winter is coming! There is in fact a 30% chance of snow above me on Mt Pinchot tonight.

This trip is finally almost here! I'll be sending out information on carpooling for those from Las Vegas, as well as where and when to meet for everyone else early next week.

    September 18, 2014

    • Eric K.

Since some must have missed this, I'll repeat myself- carpooling for those coming from Las Vegas, as well as where and when to meet near the trailhead will be coordinated early next week

Well, I'm dating a 12-year-old who has done nothing but pout since he got off this hike and got Dodger's tickets. So guess who's going to the Dodger's game too, LOL! I hate to get off this hike, I was really looking forward to it :(. But it is my baby's birthday. You guys have a blast!

Eric, I was wondering how many miles till Griswold Lake and from there to Ruby Mountain?. Thanks

    September 3, 2014

    • Eric K.

It's about 3.5 miles (with 2700' of gain) to the lake, then about 2.5 miles (with 2200' of gain) to the summit. These numbers total a bit less that the numbers in the main description as it now looks like we can start at the trailhead instead of the gate.

      Thanks!

Hi, Eric -- I am a bit torn between this coming weekend and your September date (which actually would be better for me)...but, since I am not a big camper-outer, even in gorgeous spots like you describe, might I spend the night in Elko and still peak it with you all -- or is that too complicated... ? Thanks -- Laszlo.

    • Eric K.

You are welcome to try to meet us at camp when we plan to ascend (time to-be-determined), but you're really missing out- these mountains, and particularly the lake, are a great place to spend more time than just a day hike.

      August 26, 2014

    • Eric K.

Please note that you would need to start hiking in the dark to meet up with us. I suspect we will want to leave the lake between 6 and 7 am, which would mean you would need to leave the trailhead about 3-4am, and Elko a half hour before that.

      August 26, 2014

  • Brent G. R.

I will need to cancel my participation. Thanks for setting this up, Eric. I hope to join in on another trip.

    August 23, 2014

    • Eric K.

Sorry to hear that. There will be other trips, but Ruby Dome is really special.

      August 23, 2014

  • Kevin

So the plan will be to drive up on Friday & back home Sunday after the hike?

    July 17, 2014

    • Eric K.

I'm going to be flexible, but the hike to the lake is short enough to leave Las Vegas early Saturday morning, if people prefer. Yes, we will return Sunday evening.

      July 17, 2014

  • Jeff C.

I might be interested in hanging out up there longer...either before or after the climb....for a longer backpack through the area. I'll very likely decide this close to the last minute when the weather is predictable. I'd be happy to join others for this.
