MULTI-DAY TRIP: Mountains & BBQ (Reno area)

Every Labor Day, Reno hosts the best-of-the-west rib cook-off a six day event with what should be some of the best BBQ around.  I have wanted to attend for several years, but this will be my first time (so the BBQ as well as the peaks must be considered exploratory).

Further, the Reno area has an impressive collection of great peaks to climb, including several Nevada county high points and county prominence points.  I plan to complete both those lists on this trip.

Plan:
8/27 - Snow Valley Peak- 2200' gain over 12 miles
8/28 - Mt. Davidson- 1600' over 2.5 miles
AND Virginia Peak (road hike, effort TBD)
8/29 -
East Peak- 2100' over 6 miles
8/30 - Mt. Rose- 2200' over 10 miles
8/31 - Mt. Lola- 2500' over 11 miles
9/1 - Freel Peak- 2600' over 11 miles

Summit celebrations on top of Virginia Peak and Mt. Rose.

Altitude: around 7,000-11,000
Terrain Description: Mostly trail/road
Approximate Hiking Time: 5-6 hours per day

Please remember to answer the questions after RSVPing. If you are using a phone, the questions will not appear. Therefore, please check back again to answer the questions.

Sorry- didn't notice the question earlier. It was AWESOME!!! I expect this to become an annual trip. Hopefully if there are more people and vehicles, those that get tired of the BBQ (???) can eat elsewhere without depriving those who can't understand "being tired of BBQ".

FYI, there is a nice smart phone app by the hosting hotel - search for janugget (John Ascuaga's Nugget). The app has all the info on the cookers, the free entertainment, and more. It also allows you to vote for the "people's choice" award.

Glad to have your company. Since you're local, consider bringing the family to the BBQ event on Friday or Saturday evening. Let's talk Friday evening to set up a meeting time for Saturday morning.

Eric & Dan Backster, I will be driving up; but heading to Oregon to visit family. I may need to return to Carson City on day one. I do not have details.
Dan I may join you, if it is OK, and fits my schedule. Too much to do; its GREAT!

Eric I will be joining you only for the Wednesday hike up Snow Valley Peak, the Weds dinner and Thursday on Virginia Peak. Thereafter I will be heading up north for 5 Calif P2K's in Plumas/Lassen Counties, and maybe some nearby NV P2K's. Count me in on any camp sites Tuesday and Wednesday eves.

To be clear, the plan (each day) is to do a hike in the morning to early afternoon, then shower and head over to the BBQ fest for dinner, enjoying the free entertainment, then sleeping before repeating the same agenda the next day. The one exception to the rule will be Monday (Labor Day), where will drive home after the hike, missing the BBQ on the last day.

I'm sure the hikes will be enough to more than burn off any calories consumed at the BBQ fest. In fact, maybe I should market this trip as a weight-loss event!

Also, since the BBQ fest is in Reno (Sparks actually), if anyone gets tired of the BBQ (I'm not sure how or if this is possible), there are plenty of other food options.

I've updated the itinerary. Because the Rib Cook off will be a social event, I am looking at booking a campsite with showers, but if others want to stay at a hotel, we can meet up in the mornings to head out for the hikes. If you want to camp with me, please let me know.

All day hikes, and by LVMC standards, relatively short ones.

I may join you for The Carson City COHP, and perhaps whichever of the four will be your state completion. Then up to Plumas/Lassen Counties for the five P2Ks I need up there.

Eric, I am thinking of renting a 2-wheel drive car. If the mountains have dirt roads, Can I get a ride to TH? I may stop in on Carson City or Tribal Reservations on the trip back.

Absolutely. Many of the trailheads have paved roads anyway.
