• Graffiti Removal Volunteer Project in Ice Box Canyon
There is a ton of graffiti way back (and up high) in Ice Box Canyon that needs removing. We'll meet at the Red Rock Canyon Visitor Center near the flag pole to fill out Volunteer Agreements and then carpool to Ice Box parking lot which has limited spaces. (If you don't have a pass, let the fee station attendant know you're volunteering and the fee will be waived.) Wear layers that you don't mind getting dirty. Friends of Red Rock Canyon will supply all needed graffiti removal tools (gloves, safety glasses, remover, water, wire brushes,...), snacks, water and a safety briefing. Please bring a small backpack or fanny pack to keep your personal items close by.

  • Desperado Canyon, 3AIII
A very classic and scenic dry (unless recent rain) limestone canyon loaded with wild twists and turns and challenging downclimbing. 12 rappels up to 80'. About 5 miles roundtrip with 1600' of gain. Expect 7-8 hours in the canyon, possibly quicker if all anchors are good. Requirements: Harness, rappelling device, self protection tether, helmet. Basic rappelling and solid climbing skills up to Class 3. Backpack large enough to carry group gear, including additional rope. Hi clearance 4wd vehicles needed to get to trailhead. Any lack of these will limit number that can go. I have not been in this canyon for 4 years, so we need to be prepared for any unexpected changes. Please remember to answer the question after RSVPing. If you are using a phone, the question may not appear. If not, please check back again to answer the question. To participate in this outing, you must be a current, paid member of LVMC. You can obtain a membership via this link: http://www.lvmc.org/w... (http://www.lvmc.org/webpages/lvmcjoinus.html). The fee is $40 per year for a family/roommates or $30 per year for an individual. Please contact your organizer if you have any questions.

  • DAY HIKE: Cheyenne Mountain and ridge traverse

  • Land Navigation Skills Practice
The Land Navigation Skills Practice Session covers the skills necessary to find your location and plot a course across land using a topographic map, compass, and/or GPS. This is a beginner course, but you will need a compass. The class will take all day; the morning is classroom instruction and the afternoon is fieldwork. Much of the course focuses on the map and compass basics, but it will also cover use of GPS. I will send details about where to meet and compass requirements to attendees after they RSVP. Please remember to answer the question after RSVPing. If you are using a phone, the question may not appear. If not, please check back again to answer the question. • Day Hike - Hidden Peak and "The Park" (aka Little Zion)
This hike is no more than class 2, but no beginners please since I plan to cover about 10 miles. The first section is trail beginning at the parking lot below the radio tower near the town of Mountain Springs (so it is the easier approach from the back side). Expect a full 8 hour day. As of posting time weather is predicted to be sunny with a high around 67º.

  • LVMC Presents: Trail Maintenance and Volunteerism
Please join Susan Murphy, as she talks about trail maintenance, volunteerism, and leave no trace principles. She is an Outstanding Achievement Winner 2018 Making a Difference National Volunteer Awards. Susan has a wealth of knowledge in trail maintenance and volunteering and will share some of it with us. She'll also touch on leave no trace principals and will share plenty of photographs with us. Excerpted from the BLM flickr page: "Susan saw a need for trail work at the Red Rock Canyon NCA and formed the Light Trail Maintenance volunteer work team to address it. She led 165 volunteers, working 1,638 hours, to complete over ten miles of trail work, including reconstruction, realignment, eradication and naturalization of non-native plants, and repair of damage created by flash floods and wear-and-tear due to heavy visitation. Susan also volunteers her time as a Trail Monitor, one of the most important positions at the NCA."

A very scenic route across the "top" of the park offering views down into Snow Canyon. About 7 miles round trip, net elevation gain of 872', total up about 1411', mostly all trail, with a final 1/2 mile of scrambling. On the way back we can walk up into the amphitheater. If time and energy permit, we might try to climb the elusive White Rock Peak, 4887', that's perched at the top of Snow Canyon. As I have done none of these routes, this outing is exploratory. Please remember to answer the question after RSVPing. If you are using a phone, the question may not appear. If not, please check back again to answer the question.
