7th Hike: Bull Run Marina to Hemlock Overlook & Winery Stop!

For our seventh hike, we'll do an approximately 9-10 mile out and back hike of Bull Run-Occoquan Trail with a stop afterwards at Paradise Springs Winery.

The hike alternately follows along the Run/reservoir and courses in and out of small ridges and stream valleys that take off from the main stream. In spots, there are beautiful stands of hemlocks framing the sparkling waters of the run/reservoir.

If we have enough people, we may also attempt a car shuttle to check out more of the trail, which goes 18 miles in one direction.

Paradise Springs Winery and Vineyard borders Bull Run River and is the closest winery to Washington DC and the first in Fairfax County. Serving as "The Gateway to Virginia Wine Country", the property features an 1800’s log cabin, which was renovated in 1955 by a protégé of Frank Lloyd Wright.

As usual, please bring water and lunch or snacks.  I will arrange carpools for the non-drivers.

RVSPing to this hike confirms that you agree to all group policies, including the limitation of liability policy.

i guess i missed this one---i missed 2 things the 20th. oh well. i always have wanted to go to hemlock overlook. since i've seen pictures (though many or most hemlock trees in this area are not doing well due to wooly adelgid infestation---very obvious in places like limberlost of shenandoah park).

Hi! I'm kind of a beginner in hiking. Is this ok? What is the difficult level of this trail?

Hi Monica, the hike is moderate. The hardest part for a beginner might be the length. 10 miles can be a long way. Also, it might also be pretty hot and humid which some people tolerate better than others. If you're active (ie do other sports such as running, etc), you'll probably be fine. However, if you aren't active, I would not recommend it for a beginner. Please message me individually if you have more questions.
