Mamis, this is a more casual house meeting for those of you with babies and little ones who are preschool age. We know some of you are north and therefore, we want to try to have monthly weekday meetings for those of you who stay home with your children. Lizett will be hosting this new mami meetup in Pflugerville. She is a former bilingual ed teacher and is looking for other mamis who are interested in dual immersion/Spanish playgroups. Please RSVP here and bring food or snacks to share with the other mamis and babies, and remember to help clean up. ;) Stay on the lookout for other meetings in Leander and Austin in November and December!

Latina Mami will host a meet and greet for mamis to meet others like themselves, and to meet those who share our mission of working on making community for Chicanas and Latinas. Latina Mami collectively works on on a variety of child advocacy, reproductive justice and disability and racial justice issues for ourselves and our children. We are excited about working with mamis in Austin and helping them create a peer support network and build community–all while working on child, family, and education advocacy concerns unique to Chicanas and Latinas.

  • New Mami Meetup

    Location visible to members

Come have breakfast or coffee or both, and meet the Latina Mami lead organizers AND other new mamis like yourself! Babies and little ones welcome. We are still working on a good monthly location for these, and GREATLY appreciate the feedback from other mamis as we get our Austin activities coordinated. For this initial meeting, we have chosen Cafe Creme because they have a small private room and a selection of breakfast tacos, crepes, and more. Each mami is responsible for her own purchases, but the first round of sweets is on us. We want to support new mamis in any way we can, as we transition to full time work in Austin. If you want to help us host a new mami meeting at a public place OR at the Latina Mami office in the future, let us know. • Latina Mami Info Meeting/Breakfast at our new location!

    Latina Mami office

Mamis, we are excited to announce our new location in South Austin. We are hosting an informational breakfast meeting/and a meet-and-greet for our lead organizers this Saturday morning, August 10th, at 9am. Please RSVP to me or Diana, listed below. See you Saturday! --Gloria Latina Mami Announces New Location in Austin to Support Latina Mothers AUSTIN, TX, AUGUST 10, 2017 - Latina Mami, a celebrated grassroots organization created for and by Latina mothers, announces a new office in South Austin to better support Latina mothers and children in Austin. At its new location, Latina Mami will have a weekly drop-in clinic at its new location and will be offering platicas, or chats, as well as ongoing support groups for Latina mothers. The group is also hosting an informational breakfast meeting and an opportunity for local mamis to meet its lead organizers on Saturday morning, August 12th from 9am to 11am. Latina Mami’s new location is made possible through a partnership with The Harmony Project, a nonprofit devoted to the needs of persons with developmental disabilities. “As a longtime disability advocate, I’m very excited that Latina Mami Austin is able to incorporate the needs of people with disabilities into some of our projects,” states Gloria Perez-Stewart, Latina Mami executive director. “Latina Mami’s calendar already incorporates racial justice topics as they pertain to students with disabilities, as the two are intertwined and not many groups address the needs of both. Working at our new location--across from Crockett High School, and directly beside two groups focused on people with disabilities--is an excellent opportunity for us in Austin,” says Perez-Stewart. Latina Mami offers a unique combination of culturally relevant services of capacity-building tools for Latina mothers of children around advocacy and organizing. In addition to education and disability advocacy, platica topics range from mental health, anti-violence, and organizing, and also self-care for mamis as well as topics for new Latina mothers. The peer-led group has been working on child advocacy, racial justice, and equity concerns for Latinas and their children since 2000. Latina Mami previously offered everything from babysitting collectives to ESL classes to informal birth classes to their “Mamis of Color” radio show that ran for eight years on KOOP 91.7. The nonprofit has been recognized by progressive foundations, Latina Magazine, and Univision, and has been highlighted as a model for grassroots organizing in published, peer-reviewed academic articles. Latina Mami is receiving a grant for its Mamis Ayudando a Mamis project. The organization will be announcing a new location in South Austin in August 2017. Latina Mami Austin projects will be run collectively by Perez-Stewart and Latina Mami lead organizers Jessica Ochoa Zamarripa, Diana Anzaldua and Liz Cruz. Latina Mami’s new location is at 1806 W. Stassney Lane, and will be open weekly beginning in September as well as monthly for larger community meetings. To register for the breakfast information meeting, please email [masked] . • Latina Mami Tacos/Coffee

    Location visible to members

Hola mamis! We realize that it's short notice but we want to do a quick meetup THIS Wednesday for those of you who can drop by and have a breakfast taco/coffee and just say hello. Latina Mami is excited that we are picking back up in Austin where we left off--it's been a busy, busy time for some of our lead organizers who have been getting kids off to college, finishing degrees, or who've just been working like crazy. We will not resume platicas until late August, but we do have news to share: in Austin, we will be working with young mamis and ensuring they have access to needed culturally competent mental health services in and around Central Texas. A small business owned by our collective is in the works, as well. More on that in person! We want your ideas on platicas/chats you want to have beginning in August as well, and speakers you would like us to schedule for each. All platicas have always had topics on social justice or child advocacy and this will remain the standard. If you're just looking for more social activities with like-minded mamis, let us know that, too, so that we can schedule playgroups/kids' activities for you in the fall. Finally, if you are interested in volunteering with us in any capacity, please let us know as well, and we can set a time to talk about your interests. Please feel free to write me at [masked] if you have any questions. We look forward to meeting you! Sincerely, Gloria
