What we’re about
Lazy Ass Hiking is a hiking and outdoor group based in the Inland Empire area of Southern California. Although we do many slower paced hikes, walks, and bike rides in or near the Inland Empire area, we often feature longer, more challenging, and more distant hikes and rides throughout the SoCal area. Everything from a walk in the park to climbing Mt. Whitney is fair game at Lazy Ass.
Please note that the Lazy Ass name is not a reference to being out of shape, but rather a preference for taking it a bit slower. We actually don't mind a little huffing and puffing on the trails and bike paths, or even a little boulder hopping and scrambling, but we're definitely not in a race and we don't particularly like to start hikes at the crack of dawn.
We have fun and welcome you to join our group with the understanding that hiking, biking, and other outdoor activities are inherently dangerous and potentially even deadly. By joining the group or participating in any Lazy Ass Hiking event, you agree to hold the organizers, event hosts and members harmless from any loss, damage, or liability that may occur during the event or while in transit to and from the event.

See all- Drive West and Backpack the Sespe River Trail - Ventura CountyPiedra Blanca Trailhead, Ojai, CA
Travel to Los Padres National Forest in Ventura County for a two night backpack on the Sespe River. The Sespe River Trail is a relatively easy trail located at Piedras Blancas Trailhead off Highway 33 north of Ojai, CA. The trailhead is roughly 150 miles from the Inland Empire and the start time takes into consideration the drive from the Inland Empire.
The plan is to hike 4.3 miles to Bear Camp Friday afternoon and enjoy a nice evening by the river, perhaps a happy hour with whatever we all want to bring. On Saturday, we will day hike to Willetts Hot Springs, located six miles from camp (12 miles RT). Bring a day pack or use your backpack to carry your day hike needs as well as your food. We will then hike back to camp and spend the night. On Sunday, we will hike out at our leisure. For those interested, we can get lunch in Ojai at the Ojai Deer Lodge.
This backpack is designed for those with limited backpacking experience. There are river crossings, but these crossings are not that challenging. However, water sandals may be useful. To learn more about the trail, go to Sespe River Trail to Willett Hot Springs, California - 620 Reviews, Map | AllTrails Weather and water permitting, the river has multiple swimming holes.
By going in on Friday, we will have a better chance of getting a good site for a largish group at the first camp site at Bear Camp.
If you haven't backpacked before or if you have limited backpacking experience, this trip is for you. Weight is the biggest issue with beginner backpackers; at only 4.3 miles, this trip will give you the opportunity to bring all the heavy stuff and identify what you may not need. :-) Also the elevation gain/loss is minimal and the trail is easy to walk.
You will need an Adventure Pass to park at the trailhead. Carpooling may be available.
