Artificial intelligence (AI) companies continue to find ways of developing technology that will manage laborious tasks in different industries for better speed and accuracy. In the legal profession, AI has already found its way into supporting lawyers and clients alike. These initial applications of AI to legal practice are just the early beginnings of what will be a radical technology-based disruption to the practice of law. AI “represents both the biggest opportunity and potentially the greatest threat to the legal profession since its formtion. During the event we’ll discuss the different ways in which AI is currently applied in the legal profession and how technology providers are trying to streamline work processes. We break down AI’s current legal applications into the following categories of applications: Due diligence Prediction technology Legal analytics Document automation Intellectual property Electronic billing Transformation is only accelerating. Much has been said about the practical and ethical motivations behind the duty of technology competence for lawyers. Now, more than ever, clients expect legal counsel to demonstrate proficiency across a wide swath of technologies capable of transforming legal practice and offering greater overall value to a given engagement. Q&A chatbots, where natural language processing enables the system to respond to user needs, are on the rise. The ability of machines to understand human language and anticipate our needs is leading to an improvement in machine-to-human interactions. The exploratory use of AI in legal contexts, for example: to predict case outcomes; shaping the services needed by lawyers’ clients; and raising questions about the state of current regulatory frameworks and legal liabilities in respect of AI systems.
